Sumatra Thread!

Pics
at this age the golden lakenvelders will have a single comb and the sumatras have pea comb... the lakenvelders will also feather in black and varying shades of cream to golden brown and have gray/ slate legs with pink feet bottoms hope this helps you sort out who's who
Thanks - I'll see if I can tell by that.
Boggy - The Lakenvelders are definately showing the looks of the photos I have; there's about 8 or 9 reddish-brown or red/blond - 7 are pretty small compared to the others. It's kinda fun trying to figure out what's what.

Is anyone interested in a Platinum cockerel?

Breeding this guy to black hens will produce 25% Platinum, 25% Dun, 25% Blue and 25% Black offspring.

He's still pretty small so he wouldn't cost much to ship, I already have a box and could put him in the mail Monday.

Am I the only one that sometimes dreads culling? We have close to 50 sumatra chicks out there and they're starting to grow and get good sized so I know it is time to go through and weed out the bad ones. I think we'll cull for the nasty looking combs and color of feet bottoms the first time and look for any other defects and also try to seperate cockerels from pullets. Something tells me I wont have as many pullets as I hoped

I also dread it. Here is why. Culled many, sold to others and later saw once they grew up, they didn't turn out as expected from their look as a chick. In other words, the strange coloring went away, etc. You honestly never know how a bird will turn out until it grows up. You can guess, but really that is all it is. A guess.

That's right, the best male I have right now was a mongerel as a young bird. On any kind of long tail especially, you cant tell squat til at least their first adult molt on feather type. Now yes combs, and foot color on sumatras often is what it is, but to get an over all idea of the end product, it's just hard to do on sumatra, phoenix, ohiki, any of these. I dont cull any male til they are at least 2 years old any more due to all this. It worries me to death that I'll end up hating it in the end, and in many cases, what I would have culled did turn out very very nice and was glad I kept them. AH the joys of long tailed fowl....
