Thanks - I'll see if I can tell by that.at this age the golden lakenvelders will have a single comb and the sumatras have pea comb... the lakenvelders will also feather in black and varying shades of cream to golden brown and have gray/ slate legs with pink feet bottoms hope this helps you sort out who's who
yep I enjoy it here too with what I hatch. cant wait to see pics of your sumatra, got my curiousity peeked now hahaThanks - I'll see if I can tell by that.
Boggy - The Lakenvelders are definately showing the looks of the photos I have; there's about 8 or 9 reddish-brown or red/blond - 7 are pretty small compared to the others. It's kinda fun trying to figure out what's what.
I also dread it. Here is why. Culled many, sold to others and later saw once they grew up, they didn't turn out as expected from their look as a chick. In other words, the strange coloring went away, etc. You honestly never know how a bird will turn out until it grows up. You can guess, but really that is all it is. A guess.Am I the only one that sometimes dreads culling? We have close to 50 sumatra chicks out there and they're starting to grow and get good sized so I know it is time to go through and weed out the bad ones. I think we'll cull for the nasty looking combs and color of feet bottoms the first time and look for any other defects and also try to seperate cockerels from pullets. Something tells me I wont have as many pullets as I hoped
