Sumatra Thread!

I am all for the original wild style sumatras. The blacks we have and even the duns are more wild like than the domestic, frumpy blues. The sad thing about the araucana crosses is that a blue araucana x sumatra looks more like a sumatra than many of the show strains I've seen. I have never made the cross but it has crossed my mind from time to time. Also, look at the bantam sumatras, they had rose comb bantams, OEGB, and heaven only knows what else mixed in which is why they look so domestic. If I had to choose, I would take an araucana x sumatra over any of the really long tailed, soft feathered show strains that are out there these days but that's just my opinion. The araucana crosses would at least be more feral like and good farm birds
Domestic frumpy blues???????????? My blues are my wildest ones. Absolutely more blues of mine are feral than my pure blacks.

that is a good point you have there stonykill. not all blue sumatras look or act like that. just to say the blues that are bigger do better at at the shows than the smaller skinny ones do. they need to be more bigger and fuller in the body to do really well, it shows the judge the overall health of the bird. because if the bird is small and skinny then it tells the judge that your bird has worms or is lacking in nutrition or can be sick. even if it is not skinny it can mean something went wrong along the way. I know genetics is sometimes what makes the birds smaller but that is not always true. I give my chicks turkey ration and that makes them bigger. I know it is hard to think that is possible. but nutrition has a huge effect on how the birds grow.

So, the tailless quality of the araucana does not affect the
longtail of the sumatra when crossed?!?&?*

Sounds like another cool project....
no, out of a first cross, if you use a rump-less araucana you will have over half of the chicks come off rump-less. And it can be a harder trait to breed out, than one might think. But like FMP said that is why you would use a tailed araucana

When we had blues and pretty much most of the other blues Ive seen are soft feathered and too tame. There is a difference between being skinny from disease/parasites and being lean, I could post aboit that all day. About the araucanas and rumplessness- You will always get tailes birds from rumpless parent. I think it is something like 1/4 will be tailed from a rumpless x tailed mating.

yup, that's about what I have come across, unfortunately the rumples ones had the other traits I was looking for in what I was doing. But you do get a few tailed birds.
