Sumatra Thread!

My birds are all laying very well, I have mine on layers and wheat. Today I had all three Sussex lay, the araucana layed, the warren layed, one of the new Sumatras layed. My Sumatras are laying well I have a clutch of 13 eggs so far,And the older hen sits on the eggs at night. Do chicken tend to sit on the eggs at night instead of a perch when they get close to going broody?
Also yesterday I got my first pigeon with my air rifle, and that was dinner.

Yes, this has most definitely been a tough winter and doesn't look like it'll everrrr end! I finally did start incubating though!:) I did a couple breeds of purchased eggs and put 3-4 Sumatra eggs in to check fertility. They were set about 4 days ago so I'll check for development in a few days...hope everyone's spring gets better QUICKLY!

Just got another egg from my sebright bred to my black polish its going into the incubator with the EE's my first sebright x polish died when the power went out the first go round. I love pure bred sumatra but I really want to see what these two mixed will make, mutt chickens are like a box of chocolate lol

Sorry it's been so rough, I hope you warm up soon. We have had alot of sub zero with wind chills this year but not much snow until February, below our averages. Then like 8" this weekend and now warming up and probably flooding. Going to be hard to condition birds for spring shows. Good luck with the weather hopefully spring is around the corner and you'll be hatching soon!

I don't show so I don't know how you "condition" a bird for show.
What is it that you do.......for how long do you do this.......when do you
start doing it. I did show horses so many years ago and I know
basic grooming we did all the time and the extra things we did
coming up to a show and what we did just before and at the show.
SO.......how are you conditioning birds?

I hope you don't mind me giving you my strategies. I clip the beck and toe nails. Then I rub olive oil on their face, comb, wattles, and shanks with a regular rag. I use the air spray horse conditioner for the feathers and rub it in with a silk rage to make their feather really shinny. I personally do it right before the judging starts. But some people do it the day before judging starts.

Pretty much same thing feed well monitor just with sumatras especially the males I like to have them outside so their faces stay really dark and with their long tails...wetground and sky do not help their plumage look good, will get ratty or tattered

Oh I almost forgot before you do all that, I put mine in separate pens because I put each one on a pacific diet That is high in protein, oily seeds, and lot of grains. Three days before the show they get a bath.
