Sumatra Thread!

I feel the same way. Many of the people with some good knowledge on the sumatra breed or just in general chickens have quit posting in this thread. This thread has come down to a "Hi, how you and the birds doing?" type thing, which no one learns anything from. Folks that are new to this thread don't know, and most don't stay around long enough to find out. I have to admit, there has been a few times I have thought about leaving since there is no learning here, guess I'm a sucker for hope in this department.

I appreciate your tidbit of information FMP on how the back affects the rest of the body. I must admit, I had told someone awhile ago about this, but it had slipped my mind. Look forward to you hopefully sharing some more and hopefully you will have internet back soon.

Love the coloring on the second one raph as well as the body of the second bird.
Not a breed I would get into as I'm not a game bird type. I can see why some folks
like them though. I think it's mostly that too many folks here fight the games and
the rest are bantams and cute as a bantam is I don't keep them. Good luck if you
do get some....hope you find ones you really like.

I need some thoughts, opinions, on the throat area on the birds. I can't
find anything in the SOP that says clearly what the throat area is suppose
to be like. I have seen birds with a throat that goes from the beak in a gentle
curved line into the neck. I have also seen birds that have a throat latch, a
piece of skin that is stretched from the bottom of the beak down into the neck
and has a look of no curve into the neck. Which is correct or does it even matter
and both necklines would be correct?

It almost sounds like you are describing a dewlap. We have a few birds with dewlaps but they are not ideal. The only chicken allowed to have a dewlap is a brahma hen.

If so, I don't like it. This extra throat skin makes the head bulky and unclean looking to me. I also don't think it's correct, as I don't see many sumatras with it.

Thanks FMP. I think you are right on it being called a dewlap.......makes
sense to me. I don't like the look of it as it makes the head look bulky and
not clean. I can't find where the SOP rules on the dewlap though. Maybe
now that I know what it is called I can find it. Is this considered a fault and
should be bred out?

Yes........that thin skin flap running from the lower beak down into the throat.
Is this what is called a dewlap and is it something I should not want in birds
I may want to add into the flock?

I personally wouldn't use this rooster in the picture for breeding as his tail set is too high, not to mention he has the "dewlap" skin piece. But keep in mind, this is just my personal opinion.
