See, if you were to breed the kind of hard feathered sumatra like gallo has to the average show sumatra these days you would have in my eyes an ideal bird. Those last birds pictured are a smidge too hard feathered but if you bred them to even the dun hen I showed a pic of and especially the type I see winning lately it would give a good balance, not too domestic and not too other game looking but still retains the wild look

to me it's all about what you as a Sumatra owner likes. I don't show and never will. As with anything in life, if you do what you love, other will like it too. people who buy my birds or eggs buy them because they like the natural Asian /game look. After all they ARE an Asian bird. Others want something different, and thats fine to.

gallo4319 and peachick's birds look very different overall, why is that?

What do judges like? I probably won't ever show but it's good to know what to breed towards if I plan on selling stock to those who do exhibit birds.

Back when we used to show more the judges always loved our birds because they had a more gamey look to them. Now they are placing bigger, bulkier, domestic looking birds. Its nice sumatras are getting shown and all but the judges are placing the less than ideal birds. I hope its a fad like the bunny tailed wyandottes and other breeding fads. Remember if you show, breed to the standard, not the judges.

yes, judges, especially in sanctioned shows should know what they are look at and judge BY THE STANDARD. Unfortunately, I'm hearing more and more in many breeds of them just doing what they like, or what the crowd thinks is correct and that's not being very ethical on their part. Joe blo sees a junk bird with a ribbon and then gets it in his head that that is what to look or breed for and it trickles down and we get more and more away from the standard. Have even heard of certain breeds winning and not even being a "standard" or recognised color for that breed??? Seen red lobed birds that call for white lobes win, etc etc...some one needs to set all these judges down and show them what they are supposed to be looking for!

Peachiks birds are SQ sumatras .
mine on the other hand are game I'm pursuing the germany look. the oriental influence is helping to making them friendly towards people but ,I cant trust them all
and even a judge wil when it comes to hold them cos they also got their crazy side
and I don't know if you ever got beat up for a game rooster, I had and I telling you is not very pleasant .
for this matter probably I wont be showing these line so often not until I get a well behave rooster those previous pictures are cockerel they not full grown yet they still act like a little boys.
hope all this help to answer your question .
