Haha.. Thanks. He looks shorter and stubbier than he is due to the grass around his feet, although he is still shorter legged than he should be (and he's a bit on the chubby side). I have a young blue cockerel that is looking really nice that I think I will probably use on the hens related to him, and then use him over some of the blues that need more spurs/feathering. The hens that came with him on that trio are pretty decent and really stand tall when on alert.
I have to say that I prefer longer feathered birds over the ones that are more European and gamey, but not at the expense of being short and stubby, either. I like the looks of gallo's birds, for example, but I like them as what they are, crosses.
But then, I'm a sucker for long feathered birds. If I thought I could get a 3-4 foot tail on a black sumatra while retaining it's other proper characteristics (black face, multiple spurs, feather iridescence) you can bet I'd try it for my own satisfaction
LOL, I like a rooster on the chunky side
Of course, I also like a rooster that abides by the standard, and I doubt that Sumatras are supposed to be too chunky. But chunky individuals look more gamey to me, and being a gamefowl enthusiast, I enjoy that look.
At the same time, though, I'm also a sucker for an occasional longtail. My favorite longtails are Sumatras and Minohikis. If you haven't seen Minohikis before, check out my Oriental Gamefowl Thread. They are gorgeous! They have long, flowing tails but still tend to look gamey and alert. Their close cousin, the Satsumadori, also has a longer tail, but nothing quite like what you might expect from a Longtail breed. Both Satsumadoris and Minohikis are game and are prized in Japan for cockfights.
