Sumatra Thread!

Thanks NYREDS.

One of the reasons I like this guy over the other 2 bantam cockerels is because he has the longer legs and thinner neck. The other 2 are the typical cobby bantam type with short legs and the 'cobra' (thick) neck and their wings point downward. One of them is unrelated to the rest of our stock but he is also a very dark blue, so dark that he is almost black. But with all the ladies we have, we will have plenty of hens to go around for them all

very nice bantams

Hi Champion, This is Michaels mom, we have been breeding our line of Sumatras since 2004. We originally started out with some from Mckinney/Govero we have also added a McMurray hen or two over the years, they are just on the small size and all the males we have gotten have been single spurred, so we never have used them. We are also very lucky to have a friend (Tim Jergens) that has gotten some from Schrock lines and Tom Kernan I believe and have added one or two in the past and just recently acquired about a dozen from him as he was getting out of breeding large fowl for awhile. We have been very blessed with these beautiful birds over the years and hope to continue well into the future. Thanks for asking,

They look nice from what I can see so far, the black looks to be getting a very nice tail already. They also look to have nice small combs. How is their carriage? I would love to see some pics of them just out and about :). Thanks for posting them

While I was out moving birds around today, I took a couple pics of our super dark blue bantams that are almost black. I have tried to describe it to folks, about how it is so dark blue that it looks like black with a matte center. These two are from the same bloodline, we got the eggs this spring and got them to hatch and for the longest time I thought they were both black until we were moving them. When you breed blue together for too long, they get too dark. So we will be breeding these two to some of our other blues in hopes of lightening the color some.

First is the side of the cockerel

Next is the pullet

Are you sure that's really a dark blue? A black bird with excellent lacing genes should look just like that... Whatever it is, it's awesome!!! :D
