Mary, one of my Rhode Island Reds was lethargic today. She was still walking around a bit and pecking on the floor but you could tell something was wrong. Now I just went to check on her she wouldn't respond to loud noises. Her eyes are watery and are closed with some sticky stuff. Then she moved her beak upward and her saliva was sticky-like in her mouth. I brought her inside and gave her water but she wouldn't drink. She won't open her eyes and I'm afraid shes dying!!!!! I don't know what to do at this point!!! Please help!!!! I love her SOOOOO much!!! Her crop was squishy and empty earlier but now I feel some of her layer pellets in her crop which means she was eating. I was able to save one of my other girls, Emerald, earlier this year when her crop or intestine got stuck with grass. I want to save her too!!! Thank you for any advice and consolation! :hit
😭

The symptoms sound like toxic poisoning. Is there a chance she got into something like insecticide or rat poison? How about food? Has she eaten anything she normally doesn't? Avocado, coffee grounds, any fallen berries from a tree or seed pods?

It's important to get activated charcoal into the victim immediately to do any good. If you suspect she's gotten into something, give two or three capsules of activated charcoal followed by plenty of water. It can be found where they sell vitamins for people.

Can you offer some water with sugar or electrolytes up to her beak, and get her drinking. It sounds like she may have symptoms of a respiratory disease. The eyes can be cleaned with saline or eye wash and a tissue. Then apply some Terramycin eye ointment of plain Neosporin twice a day. Is she sneezing or gasping? Separate her in a basket or crate where you can watch her. Offer fluids often. Is her crop empty, full, puffy soft, firm, or doughy?

Thank you so much! I have put her in a box where its quiet. Her crop is soft with a bit of food so I would say soft/doughy? Leaning more on the soft side. She isn't gasping or sneezing. I tried giving her water, I dipped her beak halfway into the water and she didn't respond at all. I'll try again with sugar! Would Pedialyte work or is that poisonous to chickens? I will also try wiping her eyes with saline!

She hasn't eaten anything. The coop is far away from any poisonous stuff. There are trees by the coop with berries. My dad says their called sugar berries and are safe to be eaten. He and I ate one and we felt fine (I probably shouldn't have though). They often fall inside their run and I'm sure they usually eat them. No poison around the coop or inside...

Also thank you so much for the advice!!!

You can mix 1 teaspoon sugar to 1 cup of water.
Pedialyte is also fine to give.

Do you have photos of your hen and her eyes?
Inside of her beak?

Has she had access to fresh unfrozen water during the day?
When was her last egg?

Re-check her crop first thing in the morning to see if it's gone down or emptied.
Get some photos of her poop too.
