Super Hero Hatch-Along

Day 8 (3/14)

• 7:50 AM:
- Woke up to find temp had drifted to 99.1°F
- Humidity had fluctuated through the night mildly, but was back up and holding steady at 65.7%.
- Intervention: Re-applied the third blanket, increased ambient room temp to 90°F, and restricted the vent to 1/2 to recapture heat lost overnight.
- Looking to see the Govee climb back to 99.5°F within the next hour.

• 8:01 AM:
- Temperature: returning to normal range, moving slowly between 99.5 and 99.6
- Humidity: steady at 65.6%

• 12:55 PM:
- Temp recovered to 100.1°F
- Humidity at 67.6%.
- Room heater adjusted downward to 85° to prevent overshooting. 3 blankets remained on. Vent adjusted to a touch over 1/2 open.

• 7:32 PM:
- Current temp 99.6°F
- Current humidity: 52.3%
- A few brief dips to 98.9°F during the late afternoon. Average temp since boom 99.3, but incubator successfully self-corrected and has been holding steady at current temp since 7:00 PM.

• 10:07 PM:
- Emergency Intervention. Detected humidity crash to 31.0% (Low of 29.8% recorded) at 10:00 PM. Added water through external port.

• 10:45 PM:

Yay, power's back on! Grow baby Groot.

What’s a jackery?
A Jackery is a portable battery you can run power off of. Before this, we used it for small items like charging phones and running fans. I was very pleased when I found out I could run my incubator off of it (typically, it does well on items that run below 50 watts). Here's a photo. Ours would run my incubator (the Nurture Right 360) for about 20 hours.

Very handy!

Can you also get a small generator? They are very handy.

About a year ago, we were considering one, but honestly, I don't think we lose power long enough or often enough to justify it. We might be doing it this year at some point, though, especially since we added on a greenhouse and built a new coop with power.

Welcome to day 9!

Today is an egg-citing day inside the eggs!
  • Claws and Beak: The tiny claws are starting to form on the toes, and the beak is beginning to harden.
  • Movement: The embryos are becoming more active. While you can't see it yet, they are starting to make small movements within the amniotic fluid.
Grow, babies, grow! 🌱🪺

Oh I would love a greenhouse! I am planning on putting an addition on the front of the barn which will be a greenhouse / Winter time sunroom for lounging in the sun for the chooks in the 'evil white stuff' time of year :)
