Got a little ahead of meself and posted my first official post in the "what gender is it" area before making nice over here in the "intro" area, :) Brand new to chickens by about 6 weeks, but already smitten with the 5 babies I bought. Live in So. Cal, and besides the chicks I also have the pleasure of raising my 10 year old daughter, and even older German Shepherd, and a super cool rabbit. We moved the chicks from the brooder into the coop full-time about a week ago, and they are all happy campers. Based on some reading I did here, I installed some very low wattage LED lights in the hen house thinking that would draw them in at dusk - and the first night I found them all in the house before the solar even kicked on...such smarties.

We have a plucky & friendly Barred Rock (she's been the flock leader from day one; she always jumps in my lap when I sit in the coop), an inquisitive yet aloof Rhode Island White (always the 1st to investigate something new), a feisty but friendly Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (which, darn, I'm now pretty certain is a roo/see other thread), a shy & wary Welsummer (she's getting less so, but she's definitely lowest in the pecking order as well), and a sweetly vocal Light Brahma (she's always singing some little song, no matter what she's doing).

Thanks for all the great info here at the board. It's truly been a help to me in getting started. Cheers!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Since you asked for some pics, I thought I'd post them here. :)

Starting off with my lil investigator and photo bomber, the RIW...

My BLRW that is being hailed as a little roo. Boo! will have to rehome him :( .,,

My Barred Rock, arm percher, and understated but undisputed leader of the flock.

My skittery, tittery, Welsummer (but master hunter - woe be to any bug that crosses her line of sight)

And then, my diva, the Light Brahma. Always the first & longest to dust bathe. In this case, the first to bathe on a piece of sod I put in the brooder for them to investigate.

These guys crack me up. I heart them!
