I assume its an isbar but does not seem to be splash or black or blue... any thoughts? I bought direct from Greenfire... could a splash be that black? Or a black that speckled?

Thx!

Looks like a mottled black. I got one from GFF this year as well. Its, sadly, not a desirable trait, but it was a darling chick, and I was disappointed to see it grow out to be mottled.

Okay... just did a little research on that... makes sense.. so mottled is a recessive gene and would cause this exact pattern in and extended black chick... nice... more to worry about... means Greenfire isbars are riddled with hidden recessive mottled genes... seems I have a blue that is clearly mottled as well... so of 7 chicks 2 mottled... on average i would expect 4 or so to be carriers and only 2 or 3 proper blue isbars... too bad I wont know the carriers until its too late... ah well... their blue birchens are even more of a mess... thinking i will pass on working with isbars then... live and learn...

Yeah, I was really hoping mine was some fabulous mistake, but it grew out mottled and stayed that way. I think I have a pic around here somewhere. He lives at some friends house now - he's terribly sweet, just very wrong colored.

Are you certain it isn't a mistake and an Orust?

I hope so! but if someone also got one from Greenfire it does present a worry... i have a blue that looks mottled as well... but the chest is all white then the top side mottled blue and white head mostly white... ill grow them out to see how they develop... guess i am a little gunshy with greenfire... the blue birchen marans are a mess as well.. i have 4 that are 9 weeks or so... one is clearly a copper blue and others have terrible straw/gold leakage... i ordered anotehr 10... we shall see...

Sorry, it's most likely just an undesirable then... I think they only have 2nd import now, and from what I have heard there was a lot of undesirable traits in the 2nd import...

GFF does a lot of good bringing in new and rare breeds to the US, but IMO they have their use in that area only... might be better to look for dedicated breeders that have been working with the breeds for a while...

I completely agree here - there have been a few "whoopsies" with a few breeds, but without GFF, we never would even have come into contact with some of our very favorite breeds (I love the Silverudd's Blues - aka Isbars - they are my little characters- not to mention great layers!) https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/isbar-thread.535731/page-208
Here's my post with a pic of my mottled boy, and some of the comments that went with it. :)
