Suprelorin implant (Virbac) stops hens with egg peritonitis laying anymore

I fed Henny-Honey a lot of scrambled eggs at first, as it appeared to me she was losing weight. I did read they can starve to death losing weight from this treatment, so I'd make sure she gets plenty of protein. But maybe not catfood because of the salt. I'm just not at all sure about catfood. My doc says it's okay for them to steal it, but I'm thinking the salt might not be good for Ascites. Although perhaps reproductive Ascites isn't as affected by salt as regular Ascites.

Hi ClareScifi, how is Henny-Honey doing?

She seems to be doing great, Eggdance. I took her in today, and the doc could see no sign of fluid. However, he did suggest she get a second hormone injection today. Next Tuesday will be 4 months since she had her first one. I am trying to figure out why he wanted her to have a second one, when she seems to be doing so well.

Thank you very much for the information. Our Mocha just passed three months after the implant. She is doing very well too. Her belly are normal sized and she seems have lost all the liquid weighing 2lb less than three months ago. We start to worry because her comb is getting redder. Our vet said she only needs another implant when she starts to have symptoms like before. We only worry another implant may trigger another molting.

I have read that the implants can last 6 months. I suspect this first one would have, but I have read that for many, it is only 3 months, for some 4 months (Henny's status now), and that the average is 5 months. I didn't stop to consider another molt. She had a little one in the spring, but not much at all. Only lost a few feathers, compared to my roo's hard molt last fall which nearly killed him. Good things I've got buckets of mealworms for Henny. She loves scrambled eggs, too. And catfood. I just hope she stays warm. It could be a cold fall here?

Thanks for the information! I will prepare to give her another implant as soon as she shows any sign of internal laying too.

so glad that this thread is still up and running. Although I lost my Parsley 2 years 2 months ago, I do not regret getting the implant. There was no hard rule how long the sizes work for every chicken but it does help extend their lives. What my Parsley eventually developed was Ovarian Cancer and she told me when it was she was ready to cross into heaven. I miss my girls to this day so much, but I am feeling like I am ready to start again with chickens. I just wished they lived longer than they currently do.

Sorry to hear about Parsley! How old was she and what breed? Jolene was a BSL hatchery stock and I feel she was genetically dispositioned for EYP unfortunately. I must say that getting some new chicks right before I knew Jolene was very sick has helped a lot. I do miss her, but having two new silly little ones running around sure makes me laugh!
