I wash my clothes by hand: keeps my hands strong. I can 'pop up' on my seat, and see one side of the fig tree (from a cool shaded moist place), Figs are on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Number One (Sassybird) has repulsed at least three birds this morning.

Be The Emu . . .

"Yummy! Wow, there's LOTS of them now. Soft and juicy -- pity everyone else likes them too. Hard work, this, keeping them all at bay.

That sister of mine!! Boy, I wonder when she's gonna turn up? How will that go? A few months ago, I whooped her ***. Then -- out o' the blue -- she turns around and whoops MY ***. Go figure!

And when am I gonna find a consort with good DNA? Am I gonna leave the Yummy Tree? Or wait for one to turn up?

I'm gonna peck Wheat Guy! One day. Right while he's giving me yummy wheat, I'll rush him and peck him good -- though there's always the risk that he might no give me anymore wheat. Perhaps I haven't thought this one through.

Days gettin' shorter!! But that means fresh pick. But it means cold nights. I wonder if I can get a feather suit with a zipper on the front. Take it off on summer days. Go swimming nude in the dam. Put it back on in autumn.

Huh!! I'm not jealous of those flying birds. Eating all those figs. I don't LIKE figs more than seven feet off the ground. 7-and-a-half-feet-off-the-ground figs taste disgusting. Everyone knows that. It's obvious, really."

Life at The Fig Tree
Felicity hasn't turned up.
Sassybird is guarding her treasure.
Spot and Spottina are in orbit. Even at fifty metres, you can see the 'spot' on the right flank of one of the pair.
Not much other emu activity -- surprisingly quiet.
Some dams dry. No green pick. (Kangaroos are ravaging my garden -- eating the EGGPLANT!!)
First rains should be in about a month.
Lovely to hear Sassybird vocalising at night. Will she find a partner this season? Tune in for further Observations from the Laundry Window!!

Hey, Yinepu!!

Quite the opposite. Read ES's fine post about the shrinking US gene pool.

We now have almost six years of observations (of widely varying qualities . . . ) We see that, in the wild, emus live and move in a 'semi-territorial' pattern:

they definitely get around: they definitely hold territory while breeding.

Well, Felicity is an alpha female who has, at times in her life, spent months away from here. It was a long time before we knew enough to recognise what was going on. But now the pattern makes sense:

she 'bulked up' here during Spring, and into Summer, then headed off to find a consort. The only bit of data I have on this is that I saw her leading Noddy down the track from the highway last year. I am f a i r l y sure that she has moved from the somewhat-fence-locked gene pool on the north side of my place, clear across the road to the Oudman's block, and beyond -- to the National Park -- where she can find a male that is 'beyond' the pool of her family. Bear in mind that it's not just Felicity that has her family DNA at the house-clearing here. There is Number One, Mrs. Eric if she's still around, Alpha and Omega, and other chicks of Eric's that we perhaps never met.

So, don't fear for Felicity unless she doesn't turn up here before mid-autumn.

Sassybird is here. Spot and Spottina just yesterday.

Please welcome to our community 'Shadow.'

Shadow is definitely in orbit. Haven't heard vocalisations. A little small. Dark. Nice-looking bird. Yesterday at dusk came to about eight feet from Sassybird while she was eating her wheat.

Mark,

Just found this thread. I am so glad to see you are still observing your extended family (not sure if you have adopted the emus or if they have adopted you).

If Sassybird is in fact Number one, how old does that make her? 5-6?

I will keep watching this thread now.

K (Kerry in the states)

kb!!

Only half here
observations pretty poor quality

sassybird commands at present
shadow is leaning on her dream
spot and spottina seen two three times a week
puzzlingly few other birds -- in fact none

Sassybird six this coming winter
