Surrogate help!

I am going to get some fertile eggs to place under my two hens when they go broody. Does it matter if the eggs aren't the exact same age, eg if one is 7 days into fertility and another is 9 days. Also does it matter if they are the different breeds? Thanks

Broodies usually know what stages their eggs are in. So I would say yes, you can do this as your broody will know that the egg at 7 days is younger than the one at 9 days, at least at the end she will. I have never done this, but I would think you can do it. But no, she doesn't care what breed they are. As far as she is concerned, they are all her babies.

Welcome to BYC. Fertile eggs are just that 'fertile eggs'. The age of the egg does not matter unless in excess of the viable period. A hen will set on and try to hatch a rock if needs be. Chicken hens are frequently used to hatch ducks, guinea fowl, peafowl, geese ---- basically any sort of egg.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! X3, the hens won't care what breeds the eggs are, and the age of the eggs doesn't matter to them. Just be sure that when you put eggs under a hen, you put them all under her the same day.
