Mystery blinked his eyes open again, looking around for the she-dog he knew had called his name. "Dixie!" he said in greeting, spotting her. On his feet in an instant, he trotted her way, his tail wagging in the air behind him. As he approached, he put on his most impressive handsome face, a grin on his maw. "Miss me?" he asked jokingly, knowing the answer.

((Okay, I'll be around. :) ))

"Of course I missed you, Goofball!" Dixie exclaimed, giving him an affectionate nuzzle on the neck. Her smile spread across her maw and she sighed happily. "I was just taking a break from sentry duty to grab some lunch," she added.

(Hmmm... My internet-shutdown method is suddenly not working; I can't turn the internet off and that means it's gonna shut down... D: This has GOT ta be ma dad's doin...)

"Well, that's a relief!" he exclaimed jokingly. Winking at her, he smiled charmingly, then raised a brow as she explained why she was there. "Lunch, huh? I know just the place," he said, this time sounding more serious. He stood and motioned for her to follow, trotting toward the mines.

((Sorry about that last night. I'm good this morning. :) I will be offline from noon to at least 3 pm today, though. D: ))

Quote: Dixie smiled. She realized how much she'd come to love his charming looks. She got to her feet, still achy from her fall off of the junk heap, and trotted after him. She still couldn't believe that she was his mate... Forever! She sighed happily, knowing that now she was free to spend her life with Mystery... And then she remembered how she'd betrayed him. Her heart ached when she thought of that, and she quickly pushed it away, though she knew that someday she'd have to tell him about that.

Mystery, blissfully unaware of Dixie's inner turmoil, smiled back at the she-dog as he reached the junk pile that housed the mines. Then, he trotted into the main tunnel, which went down a few feet and then leveled out in a decent-sized room there, with various pipes and bars woven into a sturdy, dome-shaped roof just like in the big den. "Anyone home?" he called down a tunnel at the back, listening as a voice echoed back. "Comin'!" It was Morado, the head digger.

Trotting out of the tunnel and into the room, Morado looked between Mystery and Dixie with a welcoming smile. "Something I can do for ya?" he asked.

"I was wondering if you had found anything good today to eat?" Mystery replied pleasantly.

Morado thought for a few moments, then nodded. "Oh, yeah, we've got somethin' good down here! You two wait here," he said, and he turned and vanished down the tunnel again.

Mystery paced back toward the exit, but sat about at the middle of the room. He motioned for Dixie to join him, winking as he did. "This ought to be good. Morado always finds the best food," he commented, looking toward the tunnel Morado had disappeared down with a hungry look in his eyes.

Dixie nodded, putting on a smile she hoped looked honest, though she knew it didn't... That smile she'd donned was a smile so fake and full of sadness and conflict that she knew Mystery would see right through it with his gorgeous green eyes. Her eyes, too, deceived her and betrayed her attempt at a merry look, for they were filled with sorrow and anger at herself. She looked away from him, not bearing to look at him when she knew he would know that her joy was false at the moment.

Mystery frowned as he looked to Dixie, noticing that she wasn't acting right. But before he could ask what was going on, Morado returned with a few diggers in tow, each carrying a cylinder-shaped metallic container, the kind that humans call 'cans'. The dogs dropped them on the floor at Dixie and Mystery's feet, and as the others turned to go back to their digging, Morado grinned. "Dinner is served."

Mystery, letting Dixie's odd behavior slip his mind, raised a brow at Morado. "What is this?" he asked, sounding skeptical.

"This, my dear boy, is a delicacy," Morado replied, grinning, "perfectly preserved through time by its hard outer shell. They call it, 'Dog Chow'."

Mystery couldn't help but laugh at Morado's presentation. "Okay, but how do we eat it?" His side brushed against Dixie's as he spoke, and he gave her a small smile before looking back to Morado expectantly.

"Easy-peasy! Are you watching?" Morado didn't wait for a response. "Step one: place one paw firmly on top of the can." With those words, he rolled a can over to himself, sitting it up and placing his paw on it to hold it still while he worked with his other paw. "Step two: wriggle one claw in underneath the tap." He demonstrated this step as well, though it took a bit of effort before he managed. "Step three: pop the tab." And he pulled up on the tab, which made a light popping noise and immediately released a mouthwatering aroma. "And... voila!" Taking the tab in his teeth, he pulled the can the rest of the way open.

Mystery watched with interest. "Dinner and a show," he muttered to Dixie. But he kept a straight face as he attempted to open a can for himself. After a few moments of struggling, the can somehow managed to flip out of his paws, landing with a sound somewhere between a clatter and a splat at the other side of the room. Chuckling at himself, he picked another can and tried again.

"For you, madam," Morado said politely, nudging the can he had opened toward her. "I've got to get back to digging, but you two enjoy." And with a wink that was mostly aimed toward Dixie, he turned and trotted down the tunnel and disappeared again.

((This post was exceptionally difficult to type. I had Rangi's little butt in my way and she kept pushing buttons and standing on the space bar. ))
