The stranger had been about to speak when he heard Dixie, his gaze moving to her. He even smiled gratefully, dipping his head lightly. "Glad ya think so, miss," he uttered. The patrol dogs didn't seem to agree, though, snarling at his every movement. Cerise looked to Dixie fondly, and it occurred to her that perhaps she had jumped to a conclusion based on this stranger's appearance. She was ashamed that she had, but let it pass, knowing that it was simply a result of Teal's evil deeds. "Please speak," she said, her reddish-brown eyes falling on the stranger again.

The stranger cleared his throat a bit, obviously a bit nervous by the attention he was receiving. "Aye, well, I s'ppose I been on me own fer too long. Di'n't even notice yer border, ma'am." He sighed lightly, shaking his head. "Been lookin' fer a pack, though, ma'am, and ya got yerself a fine one 'ere. I'd be glad ter make up fer me mistake if'n I'd be allowed ter stay?" he said calmly, looking up at Cerise hopefully.

Cerise gave him a sympathetic look. Now that the stranger had had the chance to explain himself, she fully agreed with Dixie. This was not an evil dog. As a matter of fact, though she barely knew him, she already felt like she could trust him. But she noticed the tenseness of her pack, and she knew she would have to keep them happy as well. She gave a curt nod. "I will give you a week to prove you are safe. You are to be guarded by a patrol at all times. Is that clear?"

Nodding, the stranger smiled up at the Alpha dog. "O' course, ma'am," he replied. Shuffling his paws somewhat shyly, he looked around, wondering who would be guarding him--or more accurately, guarding the pack from him, he corrected inwardly. He smiled, though it held a note of sadness. This was his burden, looking the way he did.
(I love his accent! Eeeee!! Country?)

Dixie glanced to Mystery, assuming he was watching the pups, then receded, back to her den. "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy! Who is that, huh? Who is it? Huh, huh, huh?" Raven asked her. "Is that our new Mommy or Daddy?" Jade asked innocently, blinking his big, green eyes. Dixie laughed, thinking of how silly the idea sounded.

ETA: Okay, nevermind, now it says I'm online.

(Well, it took you about nineteen minutes to write that post and that's a long enough period of inactivity for it to say you're offline; I've done that before, too!)

Mystery's heart raced as he heard the stranger's voice, and as Dixie returned, Mystery, as if in a daze, headed through the crowd as Cerise was assigning the stranger's guard. "Jiyaken!" he barked, seeing the familiar gray dog, a grin growing on his maw. "Jiyaken, you old fool!"

The stranger looked up in surprise. "Strike me stars! Mys'try!" he replied, his great tail sweeping through the air as he did.

Laughing, Mystery trotted forward, standing nearby the stranger and looking up at Cerise. "If you don't mind, Alpha, I'd like to volunteer to be his guard," he said boldly. He winked to Jiyaken. Dixie had been right, that was for sure! Mystery would trust this dog with his life if need be!

Looking curiously at Mystery, Cerise nodded. "So be it. Should anything happen, Mystery, it is your responsibility." She offered him a warm, knowing smile.
"Thank you, Cerise," Mystery replied, and then he looked to Jiyaken. "C'mon, I have a surprise for you!" he said, his tone laughing. And he motioned for Jiyaken to follow him as he trotted back toward his den.

Skirting the snarling patrol dogs, Jiyaken followed loyally, his gait somewhat lurching and his head held low. As they approached the den, Mystery nuzzled Dixie, turning to face Jiyaken. "Dixie, I would love for you to meet my best friend in the world, Jiyaken."

With a polite bow, Jiyaken smiled to Dixie. "Aye, so this is yer lass, eh?" he said with a chuckle. "I might o' known. Thank ya much fer standin' up fer me, miss." His dark blue eyes were so sincere, and his voice, though thickly accented, was filled with gratitude.

((It's something I kind of made up on the fly. I kind of read it like Hagrid from Harry Potter (don't know if you've ever read or seen that), myself. :D

And yikes! I didn't realize it took me so long! D: I was having a hard time with the interactions between Cerise and Jiyaken there.))

Dixie smiled. "It's nice to meet you, Jiyaken." Dixie replied with a warm, calm voice. "And, you're most welcome; I couldn't keep myself from piping up, anyways," she added jokingly.

The pups hid behind Dixie's legs, and, finally, Raven hissed to Jade and Minty, "I'ma bite his tail," in a voice just audible enough for the pups to hear but not for the adults. She snuck around the side of the den, cautious and careful, and looked at the dog's tail as though it were a ribeye steak. Then, she clamped her jaws down on it and sank her little needle teeth in, though they wouldn't do much more than pinch real good.

Jade had to fight to keep from giggling as he watched.

(I haven't seen Harry Potter (yet!) but I definitely have heard of it. Is Jiyaken from Harry Potter, or is he an original character? And, that's okay, that the post took so long. I hope it's okay that Raven just bit Jiyaken's tail!
Oh, and, on another subject, I was noticing that the Beta position is now up for grabs, since Steel's dead. Could I possibly... Have that position?)

Mystery grinned happily, glad to see that his mate and his friend got along so well. "And you've also got to meet--" he began, but just then, Jiyaken let out a noise of surprise as a small set of teeth sank into his tail.

"What in tha'..?!" the great big dog exclaimed. He began to turn, though all that succeeded in doing is whirling Raven around to where her parents stood. Glancing back over his shoulder, Jiyaken raised a brow.

"Raven," Mystery said sternly, giving his daughter an unhappy look. Keeping his cool, he took Raven by the scruff and plucked her loose of Jiyaken's tail, waiting for the big gray dog to turn back around to face them. Putting Raven on the floor at his paws, he nudged her sharply toward Jiyaken. "What do you say, young lady?"

Jiyaken looked to be in good humor, though, chuckling lightly. "Ya don' say! Myst'ry, ya have yerself a fam'ly, don't yeh?" he asked, looking happily between Mystery, Dixie, and the pup at his paws.

((He's an original character. :D One I've had for a very long time, too. He has a miserable history, but I think he's a great guy anyway. :)

Yes, go for it! Hopefully it will be a more trustworthy Beta than Cerise's past choices. ;) ))

Quote: Raven shuffled her paws embarrassedly, her ears drooping with guilt. Not meeting the old dog's gaze, she mumbled, "I'm sowwy," then scampered behind Mystery and hid in the plumy fur of his tail. Meanwhile, Jade had appeared from behind Dixie and was looking up at Jiyaken, blinking innocently.

"Wow... You're really big. Are you a giant?" he asked, staring boldly up at his father's friend and wagging his tail in a gesture of friendliness. Dixie had to chuckle at that comment, knowing that some dogs were just larger than others. She licked Mystery on the cheek, then sat down and leaned against him, smiling.

(I still love him! EE! He's so funny and sweet, like an old man!

Oh, and, yeah, this Beta will be very trustworthy. Is it okay if it's a girl Beta? She's going to be tied into the plot/mystery that I came up with yesterday! Heehee, you've inspired me and I spent all of yesterday brainstorming and jotting down notes for this plot.)
