Raven looked at Minty in shock as her sister looked like she wanted her to take the blame. She nearly pinned her ears in anger and her gaze moved to Cerise as she watched Minty step forward. Also looking down at her paws, she stammered uncertainly. "Um, well, I don't really... We just wanted to see what the den was like..." she said.

Dixie looked at the stairs and said nothing. Russet looked disappointed, as he had half-hoped his idea would have been a good one. But it looked like Mantis's idea was better. He said nothing, sitting on his haunches and yawning. Finally, Dixie spoke up.

"We need to do something; that poor dog looks like she's getting weaker by the moment!"

Cerise nodded. "Then go ahead," she said, motioning around again.

Minty had a moment of disbelief, looking from Cerise to Raven, and then back to the Alpha again. Her tail up, she smiled. Well, if Cerise was okay with it, then that was fine by Mint! Looking around, she spotted a somewhat private alcove toward the back of the den, hopping that way.

Her eyes gradually adjusting to the darkness, she sniffed around the alcove, taking note of two nests likely meand for Cerise, herself, and an Alpha male if there was one. Hmm... Minty gave the nests a disapproving look. They were so plain, not any better than the ones she and her family shared back at their den! When Minty was affla, she would have the very finest nest in all of Chroma pack!

Moving on, she trotted past Cerise and nosed around a somewhat high patch in the floor at the middle of the den. This must have been where Cerise sat while addressing dogs in her den. Minty carefully hopped up onto this high spot, looking around. Not high enough, she decided. She would change that as well!

Wagging her tail, she sniffed around a bit more before growing bored. She yawned to show her boredom, walking toward Cerise again. Sitting there at the Alpha's paws, she looked up at the older she-dog curiously. "Miss Cerise?" she said, almost shyly.

"Yes, child?" Cerise replied, looking down at the pup rather fondly.

"When you were li'l, did you awways know you would be affla?" Minty asked, sitting quite patiently at Cerise's paws as she awaited a response.

Cerise smiled warmly. "Well," she began, though she hesitated as she looked toward Raven to make sure the other pup wasn't into trouble.

Mantis shrugged, continuing on his way to the garage. He approached cautiously, looking around for any signs of humans. They were not near at the moment... He would have to move swiftly, though, to avoid them. He hopped up onto a tool bench, looking around quickly before nosing the portable stairs off the hooks it hung on.

With a clatter, it fell to the floor, causing Mantis to tense in surprise. He listened closely... Sounded like humans were moving around on the other side of this wall! Quickly, he hopped down to the cement floor and put his head between two steps on the 'portable stairs'. With it secure, he ran back toward the others, rounding a corner out of sight just as a human appeared in the garage.

"Phew..." he sighed in relief. Looking around at the others, he quickly returned to his brooding expression as if he was afraid for his reputation. "Well, here it is."

Raven looked at her sister and watched in awe as she poked around. How on earth could she not be afraid? Jiyaken was going to be so mad! Whimpering a little and tucking her tail between her legs, she was about to tell this realization to Mint when she spotted something: a beetle, traveling slowly along the ground.

Pouncing it, Raven was oblivious to the world around her, now.

Russet looked at Mantis and rolled his eyes. Taking a deep breath and puffing it out with much force so as to blow the lock of grey hair out of his face, he said, "Well, that will work," while scratching behind one ear.

Dixie, however, was clearly getting nervous. "Well, hurry up! I think she's slipping under!" she barked.

Quote: Jargo was loping through the Loner Lands with a large rabbit hanging limp and lifeless from his jaws. He spotted Harli and lumbered up. "Hey, gorgeous, look what I got," he said, Dropping the rabbit, he added, in a tone of devilish glee, "It's still alive." And indeed the poor rabbit was, for as it hit the ground, it kicked it's legs and squirmed, though it was mangled past the point of no return to life.
(Awh! Poor rabbit!!)

By now, Harli was feeling queasy and very sick. "Ughhh... I don't feel good." she moaned. Her nose was a deathly white, and she laid limp. "Kill it for me... yeah?" she told him, knowing he would get pleasure from it.

(XD It's just an imaginary one! LOL! But really, I saw my dog eat a half dead rabbit. It took until she had eaten off it's rear end for it to die... Poor thing! DX But she wouldn't let me get it; she would just growl and get away with her "prize".)

Jargo nodded and began tearing and snapping at the injured critter. Finally he had thoroughly shredded it and nosed the bits and pieces towards her.

Cerise smiled to Raven, then looked back to Minty. "When I was young, I didn't know what I wanted to be. I certainly never thought I would become the leader of this pack," she replied.

Minty tilted her head. She didn't know? Then how ever did she become Alpha?! But before that question formed into words in her mind, Mint thought of one even better. "What did you do ba'fore you were affla?" she asked, looking eagerly up at Cerise. If she did whatever Cerise did, maybe she could increase her chances of being promoted to Alpha as Cerise had been!

Cerise spared a glance for Raven again before responding. "I did lots of things, Mint. I tried digging, sentry work, patrols, but nothing seemed right. Then before I could settle on a job, I was given the rank of Beta." She smiled warmly to Mint. Such energy, such curiosity! It reminded her of when her sister, Scarlet, was small, and you would tire just for being in the same den as her.

Mint drooped a bit at that response. It wasn't exactly what she was looking for... "Oh, okay," she replied, looking away. But then she realized that that was what she had already been doing--trying different jobs! She brightened again. "Thanks, miss affla!"

Cerise chuckled. "No problem," she replied, patting the pup on the head. Then, her ears perked as she heard Jiyaken's voice. "You didn't happen to sneak away from your pupsitter, did you?" she asked knowingly, glancing between Mint and Raven.

Mantis nodded curtly, waiting as Mystery picked up the other end of the 'portable stairs'. The two of them trotted quickly over to the unnatural pond, where Mystery dropped his end of the stairs and peered over the edge. Dixie was right! From somewhere across the pond, water had begun to pour in and was causing waves to wash the reddish she-dog off of the shore!

He motioned quickly for Mantis to begin lowering the stairs into the pond. The two dogs, side by side, took the top rung in their maws and let the stairs down slowly until it reached the shore below. It was just tall enough, Mystery noticed with relief. He looked around expectantly for someone to volunteer.

Mantis turned his head away as if in disgust. Scarlet moved from paw to paw anxiously. Mystery still didn't wand Dixie to go down, and he wasn't sure if Russet was big enough to haul that she-dog out of the water and up the stairs. He sighed lightly. That left him.

Pausing momentarily to muster up his courage, he approached the edge of the unnatural pond, and then leaped into it, splashing in the water at the bottom. Quickly, he paddled to the small shore, where he caught the she-dog by the scruff just before she disappeared below the surface. She was so light... She must have been down here for days! From here, Mystery could see how bony she was, and briefly he wondered if they had come too late. She was also quite small, though the trauma of being trapped in this pond had made it difficult to determine if that was because of her age or if she was just a smaller dog.

He looked toward the stairs they had lowered into this unnatural pond. Now was the challenging part... Hauling himself up onto the small shore, he adjusted his grip on the she-dog's scruff and began to climb the stairs. It was tougher balancing than anything, for the she-dog didn't weigh much at all. A few times, he felt himself falling and had to stop. At last, though, he neared the top, and with all his might, he held the young she-dog up for the others to take.

(O.O *gag* Poor rabbit!!!)

Harli looked away, gagging. But it wasn't because of Jargo, it was her stomach. "Jargo, I can't eat." she muttered, trying to keep from throwing up. "You eat it."

Quote: Raven looked at Cerise and Minty and said, "Hey, what's going on? What did miss affla do?" Her voice was full of confusion as she had not been paying much attention to the pair's conversation and was now thoroughly puzzled. Padding up, she looked between Minty and Cerise. "Cers... Ceire.... Cer... Cerise," she said, trying her hardest to pronounce the Alpha's name. Before the she-dog could respond, Raven launched into the second part of her sentence, her little brown eyes filled with something like wonder. "Can I be a Sentry like mommy or daddy?" she asked.

Dixie reached down and grabbed onto the she-dog's reddish scruff, but despite the she-dog's light weight, she was still quite heavy and just as Dixie got a good grip on the dog's neck, she felt herself being towed downwards, towards the pond. With a howl of fright, she let go of the dog's scruff and staggered backwards. Russet, just in time, leaped forwards and his teeth locked loosely on the she-dog's right ear. Adjusting his grip, he used all his might to hold her up. Her fur was sodden with water, adding to the weight, and the ground was slick. Dixie held the nape of the she-dog's neck in her mouth, now, and together the twosome began hauling her up the side of the strange pond, their steps matching perfectly.

Finally, they had her mostly on land. Panting, they dropped her gently on the ground. Dixie looked at Mystery and gave a quick nod. "She's safe," she barked. Russet collapsed on the ground beside the she-dog, panting. "Well, she's... I guess she's in good hands now, huh?" he said.

(I know...)

Jargo looked at her, concerned. He hoped that this litter wouldn't be like their first litter! He took a few pieces and chewed them into a pulp before nudging them up against Harli's nose. "No, you must eat," he said firmly. "This doesn't need to be chewed, just swallow it!" he said, his voice full of concern and worry.
