"Do you like Smokey?" Melanie asked, licking a smokey gray male pup. "We can call him Smoke when he's older."
"I love it; it's perfect..." Rex said, leaning over to lick the tiny gray pup. "I just can't believe the only way we will be able to keep the pups is if we train them to hate good, and love evil..." Rex said, shaking his head in sorrow and disbelief.

Harli curled her lip, and looked down at her sobbing mate. "What?" She asked, her voice cold.
Jargo dropped what he was carrying: It was a sack, old, torn, tattered, and obviously burried. Jargo tipped it over and it's contents spilled across the den floor. Bones; the skull of a dog, along with several ribs, and a backbone. Jargo wept more as a piece of wood slid out. On it was an engraving of a beautiful young female dog, obviously engraved by a talented dog's teeth.

Melanie's face hardened, her eyes turning cold. "We aren't." She snarled, "I don't care what he does to me! They will never be trained that way!!" She snarled, her body fierce.

Harli's eyes widened. "What in the world Jargo?" Her voice was soft. She dropped beside him, looking deep into his eyes.

Jargo's eyes were full of pain. He stood up, but he didn't have his normal Alpha-dog carriage; he was slumped over, in they pose of a grieved dog. "She was my old mate... Cherry." he said slowly.

Rex smiled at her determination, but he was thinking inside. Thinking hard. Suddenly, without saying a word, he leaped up and vanished into the darkness, leaving Melanie alone with the pups.

Harli's face went soft, but her eyes were as cold as ice. He doesn't love me as much as he still loves her. She spat to herself.

Melanie scrambled to her feet, her pups slipping from her belly. "Rex?!" She called. "Oh Melanie, you're such a stupid flea bag. Now you've gone and hurt his feelings." She growled, and laid down again.

Jargo looked at Harli. "Endigo... he killed her. I was leading the pack into war, and he took her and said that he would kill her if I moved. I ran forward to comfort her... and he crushed her skull with his jaws... I remember the look in her eyes as he did that: pain, fear, confusion." He looked down at his paws. "When you and Endigo were fighting... I just couldn't stop imagining that... she was just like you, and when Endigo hurt you the way he did earlier, I was worried... so worried. I know that he will kill you, too." Jargo began to sob. "And, I know you probably hate me now, and I guess I'll accept that; I just wanted to keep you safe... from him..."

Rex continued to run, on and on, further into the woods, past Evergreen Pack, until, finally, he reached the land he was headed to: Unclaimed Territory of the extinct Shadow Pack, which were all killed or died out. He began marking territory as fast as he could, making one large border around the land. Finally he stopped and patrolled; everything was marked. He couldn't believe it: the land was HIS! His and Melanie's... he stood there, apnting in awe.

Harli froze. Her thoughts swirled. She couldn't stop them. Closing her eyes, she tucked her head under his neck. "Jargo, I-I'm, I'm so sorry. I was horribly rude, and was being so stupid."

Melanie felt her head begin to nod, she lowered it, and nuzzled each one of her pups before falling into a deep sleep. There, she dreamed. The image of Banner's face returned to her mind. His scream of agony, as Everest punctured his throat. His last words to her, his body: bloody, battered, weak and torn. Everest's mocking face. Her last words to Banner. The last time she saw his face. These thoughts swirled in her mind, filling her with agony. Her eyes snapped open, and she uttered a scream of fright.
