Surviving Another Depression.......What Would We Need?

We have been putting up MANY of the things listed. We also live in south Louisiana, and some of our stuff was VERY handy after Gustav. Our plans have been to be able to be electricity free if necessary. But it's hard to envision a life like that. So we have done our best to cover all the bases, and like others, that's how I was able to get my chickies. But we at least have some food source if it gets rough.

We need a community house for all BYCers, guns, TP, tons of plants and animals, and maybe some books.

we are already living as if it is a depression(we are very thrifty and COULD be frivolous) but have learned that if you can't pay cash DON'T BUY IT. we eat out once a week, burned wood in woodstove all winter(lots of downed trees on our neighbors property that they let us cut) and keep house at 54 degrees all winter(you may complain now but you WILL have cash when needed) eat extremely healthy(it IS cheaper despite what some say) don't smoke(unnecesary) don't drink alcohol anymore(unnecesary)no trash service (we recycle, burn)only buy clothes at thrift store(great jeans) and will soon be doing meat chickens(for humane reasons but need to learn NOW!)also have barrels to collect rain as we have often lost power and had no water in the house.Med wise I already stockpile(am type 1 diabetic) so its a good start towards depression-era behaviour. hope it gets better soon.

You might need a good OLD canning book!!
This was my grandma's and I have used it basically because the recipes are so basic. If anyone is interested in particular recipes give me a hollar!

I just went through 16 days without power. Well, the food wasn't a problem, we had plenty of blankets........the big thing I will always remember and plan for is water....water....water.

We couldn't get to town for five days because of the ice..........I thought I had planned.....NOT.

I had about 20 gal. of water.......not nearly enough.

Now,everytime I empty a milk carton.........it's filled with water and stored.

Water Guys.......HONEST!!!

Listen, I am NOT making fun, but everytime the wind bloes hard my Mom calls and says "fill up your bathtubs". I don't know what she thinks my bathtubs full of water is going to save or prevent but I swear she does this.

If we were without electricity we could dig a root cellar like we had when I was a child and store all the turnips, carrots, potatoes, and canned food down there.

A van--might have to live in it on someone else's property.

Beside the 20 gals of water we filled I had both bathtubs filled.

I had to water chickens, pigs.........not to mention flushing toilets.

Listen to your mom...........she's right.

Anyway, if it's not THE STORM......how hard is it to drain a bathtub?

Mother knows best!!!
