Surviving Minnesota!

I threw a junebug in and holy heck! Bug parts were flying everywhere! That bug was nearly vaporized in less that a minute! I have some wicked chicks!

Question for anyone: Do you use automatic pop door closers on a timer ? and if so what kind?
Oh How I've considered these doors. The lazy bones laying in bed on a frigid January morning. Not wanting to walk down and let the chickens out. Or the times I've begged family members while I'm on my trips (although there's not been many) to open in the morning or close at night. They are $200 no matter the company. As far as I can tell. I've also reflected that I like the idea of getting myself out of the house in the morning and in the evening to check on things. or to just get outside. Which is a goal of mine anyways. Just to be outside as much as possible. The chickens and the cheaper do-it-yerself pop door ensure that.

Ralph...I read where you figured out one of the English gals is using the tree. Clever little thing! I did want to say, I've never had a SS go broody. The Barnevelders & Austalorps yes....but no SS.

I have been reading up on them, some do, some don't. If she doesn't the tree will run out of space in about 3 months when it gets 100 eggs or so.

Wonder what made her decide to lay eggs in a tree vs. a nest box. Maybe she is thinking about going broody.

Tonight I found a cute little mouse in the scratch. I scooped it out with a bucket and dumped it in the middle of my flock who were eating scratch in the lawn.

Just as I have suspected Daisy the buckeye went screaming after it. She has been my mouser in the coop. Since I've had her...hardly a sign of mice. I knew it. I knew it.
The rest if the birds just looked at it. Daisy went ape after it. She's a fickle layer but since she's a mouser I'm keeping her!!!

So many junebugs around right now, is it ok to toss one in the brooder for the chicks to eat?

When I threw a junebug in with my 5 week old chicks they just looked at it. Then one was brave enough to grab it and the chase was on! Now about half of them like junebugs.

Oh! That poor mouse! D:
I have seen one of my chickens eating a small shrew before, and sometimes they eat frogs...
