Surviving Minnesota!

You tell them not to eat it! It is as simple as that. If they try to eat it you give them a time out or a paddle on their butts. It will work, trust me on this.

Or I have no idea how to keep little ones out of big ones feed. I just looked up the stats on feather fixer and I see it is 18% protein. Protein being the key I think during molt, why not use a game bird feed. I am feeding everything a 22% game bird finisher right now because of the molt and it does not hurt the young birds. Oh, I feed a mash too. My birds look at pellets or crumble like my kids use to look at spinach or liver, there is no way they will eat it.

Telling them not to eat it didn't work.
So it shouldn't hurt the little ones just because of the higher protein ... wonder if FF has the 22 % game bird, I'll check next time
I'm there.

Hey Ralphie - whats MPH?

D-i-l and I went to Brainerd today to get the gardening supplies she needs and the elastic I need for chicken saddles. I will get two of the saddles done tomorrow a.m. A larger saddle than the normal size.

Ummmm . . . . oh! neighbor sent me a picture of all the eggs she has gathered while we have been up here in Aitkin. Holy eggs those chickens are laying! Must be the right food now. Question: Do you wash your eggs? I have not but do wash my hands after handling them.

I was repeatedly attack by my best looking Dom Rooster tonight. It is Judy's fault. I have reprimanded her appropriately. Last night she was going to hold this one or had reached in it's cage for some reason and she withdrew her hand rapidly saying it had pecked her hard a couple of times.

I told her just man up and grab it and hold him. I assumed she did this as I was doing other things.

Tonight I went to take that guy out of his cage and he repeatedly peck me, HARD! I reached in pulled him out held his head down. tipped him over looked him in the eye and told him that was enough of that crap. I did not use the word crap in all honesty. To sat what I really said might get me my 2 days detention from BYC.

I held him in submissive positions for several minutes. When I ley him up I had a changed bird. He was meek and mild and did what I wanted. He did not even fight my stretching out his wings. He stood straight and tall on the table and did not try to get away once. When I put him back in the cage there was no attack, he just waited for his treat. He took it graciously without any snide comments.

I think I have solved that problem. We will see tomorrow.

I have a toe that is not perfectly straight on one of my SS rooster, how bad will that hurt me in the judging? I think he is near perfection otherwise, but what do I really know about it.
It is a small thing, it will count against him but not a huge mark.

But I think she is referring the heating pad suspended and used to keep chicks warm. I have some and use some. You make a "cave" like for the chicks to stay in. I have had some good results and some not so good. The idea is a great one. I just have had some suicides with them. However, I get some deaths with heat lamps too.

While I liked them in the house, I did not like them in the coop, they were too much work for the number of chicks I raised last year. If I only had a few it would be the way to go.

That's good to know, I will not have to kick him out of the "show bird boot camp" now. I put a new bird into "show bird boot camp" last night. A partridge Chanticler rooster, he is a tad older than the one I have in there now, and his "keel" is fuller and not as prominent. I am only taking one, but I have not settled on which one yet. His coloring is not as good as the first one.

Oh and I won the prize pot this morning. Could you please all send me your buck, Better luck to you all tomorrow.

I know I posted this picture in another thread, which means I shouldn't here. But I just like this rooster so much and I thought the message he is now sending is so cute.......Yeah I know I made it myself.

I really think he will do ok in the show, but who knows. If he keeps biting he may not live long enough for the show.

I fell asleep after I heard neighbors dog barking because then I knew the bear wasn't in my yard anymore.

A purpose for a barking dog.

I went out and "held" my roosters for their boot camp lesson this morning. It went ok for the biggest part. But the one Judy ruined last night did try to bite me. He did not bite when I reached into the cage like last night. He bit my arm while I was trying to rearrange him and get him snuggled into my elbow. I had a canvas jacket on so I hardly noticed it. We did have a long talk about his new found habit of biting. He apologized and promised to not do it again.

I love walking in the yard just before sunrise or during it. The roosters crowing is so peaceful and relaxing.

I can see why polish can never free range. I can reach into their pen from above and grab anyone I want. they have no idea I am reaching for them. They are the perfect Fufu chicken. I am thinking they may become strictly indoor chickens. Even the appletinies see me and run from me. Their Mohawk does not stop them from seeing up.

You didn't ask but... I'm just saying I would get those little barrettes they make for young girls and probably boys now days, and clip the feathers on the heads up out of the way.
