Surviving Minnesota!

Door all done! just have to get the torsion springs set. need to study up on how those work as this is the first time I have worked with them. 1 down 2 to go!

Also picked up the siding I ordered. maybe perhaps it is time i bought myself a trailer?? The packages are 12 feet long so i built a pallet that ran the length of the bed and hung out 4 feet to support it all. worked well but the yard guy at menards who helped me load said "this is pretty clever but most people just use a trailer' haha DW agrees now :)
Trailers do come in handy ;) As long as you could navigate and drive with your front wheels on the ground still. We saw a guy one time at Home Depot load his little light truck with more wood than even your big truck could hold and it popped the tool box out of the back he had bolted in. Then when he tried driving out, his front tires were barely touching, and then he got hung up in the drainage trough in the parking lot. It made for much entertainment that day.

Good morning Erlibird. And Byc folk. I'm still here and reading. Low on chicken news. I have more black trumpets growing in my yard. Tiny. But you're welcome to them Jerry. Also there's a woman in town that has a new giant puffball growing in her yard. I'm sure if I stopped and asked she'd let me harvest it. We'll have to figure out time for our mushroom forage. I'm still putting in work time on Saturdays. Sunday might be best but not sure how that works for every one.

Junior spent the night outside Friday to Saturday. I had him crowing into the sliding glass door early Saturday. Too busy to count heads Friday I guess. But all is well. He's been putting out predator calls yesterday as DS saw a hawk circling. DH was also cleaning ring bills on the tail gate. So not sure what was freaking him out. Lol. He's really developing and getting prettier by the day. Got a compliment on him yesterday from DH's friend. So feeling like a proud chicken mom.
You're going to need to grease up that comb and wattles this Winter!

This was just vinyl siding, so a light load with high volume, no issues for my truck weight wise. If they ever made trucks with an 8 foot bed anymore I wouldn't have the issues I do but alas....

I will be trading my 150 for a 3/4 ton truck next year with a plow and selling my little ol' jimmy plow. Then I can really have some fun

So it's homecoming week this week, and today's dress up day is Hobo day. First off I don't know how the teachers let them do that. Second off I've seen about 1/4 of the school and no ones dressed up for it

Our HC started this week. It was Greeks(Seniors) and Geeks (everyone else) day. My daughter dressed as Tina from Bob's Burgers. It fits her.

Tomorrow is Patriot Day, Thursday is Color Day and I forget Wednesday.

Here it is. Pancake toadstool.

Yummy Pancake toadstools!!

Never heard of them.. Of course I picked 3 yesterday I have no clue as to what they are.

HOLMS!! I never eat one until I am 100% sure it is safe!!!!

Puffballs are safe, you have to make sure they are not stinkballs, oh and you have to make sure they are not too ripe, or marshmellowy.

Actually Erlibrd, that looks like a bolete of some kind. If you had flipped it over we could see for sure. There is a guy that says there is only one poisonous Bolete. I am not so sure of that, I have yet to eat a bolete of any kind.

Minnie I threw the Dom with the flat cushiony comb back into the "Spring is doubtful" pen. I decided fighting him everyday, with the comb that bothered me from the start and a form I am not crazy about, (not just his small size)\ made him a perfect candidate for the "spring is doubtful group". I actually picked out 2 Dom pullets to pick between for the show.

Also Andy is headed to the "spring is doubtful" pen. While examining him tonight, I noticed a "sprig" on his wattle. It could be and most likely is an injury, but his lack of a crest and that minuscule sprig, has sentenced him to an uncertain fate.

I have only one CLB pullet in next years line up still.

I am trying to go through my other FUfu's and see what I have. I think my straight run from Cackle on Fufu's is even more questionable.

I think I have:

2 pullets 6 roosters ----- Cuckoo Maran
1 pullet----6 roosters Polish
1 pullet 7 roosters Yokohama

I am not sure I have any pullets in my 8 Appeltinis! I had 2 die as chicks, If they were both females I had 6 girls and 26 boys in straight runs...

Something is not smelling right here.........

I picked Cackle because they told what the problems with the breeds were and if they had disqualifying traits what they were. I thought with that I could breed them up to become decent birds. I did no know they would lie on the straight run! This may be my last order ever from them.

You would think out of 32 chicks I would have at least 10 females. I will not know the final count until I get them separated into their new pens.

I spent today building new brooder pens, breeding pens and feeders. I made some of the PVC pipe feeders. I think I am going to like them, I have used a couple for a few days, the feed waste seems way less than the other feeders.

My SS roosters have turned into big mush bags! Judy opened the door to one of their cages tonight and the bird ran into her arms. She was holding the other one and it was picking at its toes, Judy's button and just cooing as she held him. I wish all chickens had SS personalities, they are the sweetest birds~! I have been trying to find a PITA for Jerry so he would have to spend a few months rubbing his tail to calm him down, but I can't find a PITA SS. so he might get a semi-nice one...

Erli and Holms Beings you two are doing Mushrooms now you joining the Surviving Minnesota thread Mushroom hunt?

Morning...I win! Actually just popping in to comment on Ralph's SS. I've never had a PITA SS rooster. Some friendlier than others, but no jerks. My hens all have been sweeties! I really love my SS temperaments. Ralph, are you planning to show any of the SS? What about the turkey hen on your "maybe" list?

The hen is still on the maybe list. BUT I have to make my mind up soon. Entry deadline day is coming up fast.

I am Training a SS rooster to behave badly for Jerry. I have him living with guineas so he picks up gangster behavior. I am cutting wild hemp so he is chewing on Marijuana and being stoned all day. Every time he acts like a PITA I throw him some crack corn so the bad behavior is reinforced....
