Surviving Minnesota!

Quiet bunch today!

Tomorrow is the big shrooming day!

I have 2 SS roosters ready to go for the ride tomorrow. I decided to let Jerry decide which one he wants. They each have strong points and each weak points. (like all birds)..

Ivie about the eggs. I do not know of anyway to pasteurize them other than maybe radiation. I think heating eggs to 180 degrees is called hard boiled.

What I do is sterilize the eggs I hatch. I have to wash them in 115 degree water with 2 tablespoons of chlorine in a gallon of water. I rinse the eggs in 115 degree water under the faucet, I then dunk them in the chlorine solution rinse again and dunk in a second solution and rinse again. I only do this because JJ's Girlfriend says I have to, and JJ would rat me out if I did not do it. I cover and store the eggs on turntables until I put them in the incubator that is sterile in theory.

I do not do this with eggs we eat. I try to just sand them clean. If I do have to rinse them I use hot water and run it over them then dry the egg. The USDA says they should be disinfected, The Minnesota Ag Dept says they should be sanded and never given a water bath but use an egg cleaning solution if you are going to sell them. After you get your license to sell eggs legally.

Holms why would you not vaccinate calves? We had bangs here when I was a kid, I think only 2 cows were vaccinated the rest were forced to be destroyed after being branded with a big "B" on the necks. It was ugly. I know if I ever get cattle of any kind I will have to vaccinate them before I get them. As I understand it Bangs can live in the soil for over 100 years. While I am close to EJB's age I do not claim to be 100 like him.

Next Saturday the camp bus is stopping here to pick up a bunch of roosters. We are not doing a lot of them, we are going to let the nice Asian lady with the plastic lined trunk have most of them.

We normally vaccinate but last year we had issues and weren't able too. We will vaccinate this year though.

Lol. Are you sure you don't mean pastured?
I think eggs just go through and FDA approved egg washer. And yes unfortunately it takes the bloom off in which then eggs in the United States require refrigeration. It's dumb really. Europe, Mexico, etc,,, eggs sit on a dry goods shelf at stores for sale. If you give hens clean nests, you'll have clean eggs.

Ivie agree Ralphie needs to hold Judy on his lap instead of chickens!

LOL I just signed on looking for an answer again. I know its crazy but the eggs were referred to 'eat before 21 days from the hatched date as they are not pasturized. how would an egg be pasturized? still on it about this

Thanks Klop About the nursing home info. Maybe the eggs are already scrambled and in a bag. They buy those for the breakfasts the Knights make at church. Did you get rid of all your eggs at the farmers market today?

Ralphie, how far did you need to travel to watch your granddaughter play football? Have you seen that new granddaughter lately?

I did get a brooder made today and put it on my work bench in the garage and of course, it has a heat lamp over it. LOL. Its not square but it will work just fine. I scavenged all recycle wood from around the resources stored on these premises. Feeling pretty good about it as it is the first thing I have actually made all on my own. Pertaining to wood and sawing and nailing and screwing.

Next I will make a run to add onto it and it will be a tractor for the chickens. It is light enough that I can easily move it. I may make another sometime just because of the challenge of squaring it.

I have Chicken of the Woods growing on my property. I will post pictures, hopefully tomorrow. Of course I see all these mushrooms now. Ralphie, if you want to stop by I will show you where it is and you can decide if you want it. You may not get that offer next year. I am not ready to get into mushrooms.
But hey! You mushroomers have a great time tomorrow!

Cochin area is all done except one. It needs window screen on the side.
I've got church tomorrow morning and a 4H thing in the afternoon

Not much to report this morning either. Skipping school and heading to my grandparents to work cows.
This morning I found one of our newest batches of market rabbits dead. They just roam the yard, but there were no cuts, may have been internal injury, it was still warm though
Could have been scared to death, could have found something toxic, like a plant or some kind of substance you weren't aware of, could have had hardware(though I doubt all of them would have that), or eaten moldy food of somekind. I am sorry about there. I really need to butcher two litters out here. I am hoping to get to that either tomorrow or Monday.

Oh Ralphie. Poor Judy with Chickens at her good dining table.

I have to show off Patsy Cline.
I'm so excited for this bird's first egg ...I can hardly wait. She's a Welsummer and that egg will be as gorgeous as she is. Her face has been red for a couple weeks now. I love her maroon coloring around her face and the contrasting gold hackle feathers. She is also very friendly and was chasing my son in the yard with her overwhelming curiosity yesterday. We call her "Pinhead" lovingly, of course; as her body is much larger than her head.

Here's Pinhead: Or Patsy.

She is lovely (of course), and her head shouldn't be big like other breeds you may have had, they should have a finer head. She really is gorgeous. I hope she lays good dark ones for you, maybe speckled.

Good morning from the farmers market!!

Selling 15 dozen today plus garlic and jumbo jalepenos. Yum! Garlic has been a big hit this year. Anyone else here grow garlic?
Haven't we been down this road before with the garlic ;) I have almost 11 pounds of garlic seed in the garage and getting ready to plant it, possibly tomorrow. DH was clearing out the garden where we will be putting it in. We had to get a restart after the two months we lost in Spring over our son kind of ended our chances of getting any gardening done. I know I have Georgia Fire, German Extra Hardy and Music, but I forget the others I bought this time. We will have plenty next year if all goes well.

Idk if I am gonna get to show in Hutch this year. That's a bad weekend for us this year with a good family friends wedding and we are setting it up and doing all that fun stuff lol. BUT I think we could make it down for a day!

Layers sorry to hear about your grandpa's horse. You're already working cows?! We don't work ours till middle of November after deer season and then sell the calves sometime in December. We have 1 cow that cycled a few weeks ago and is bred back but she is going to the sales barn. We would like all the calves to be born before May so she will just be too late.
WHAT???? You are going to take those Bucks down??????? You need to! You really, really need to!!! Maybe Ralphie can haul them down for you? Or someone else? It will be sad if there are only one or two of us showing any again this year. Your cockerels, I am sure look better than mine do too.
