Surviving Minnesota!

My DH informed me an hour ago that the rain will not be happening all day. He knows how I feel about cozy-ing up inside the premises when the weather is not so delightful. Burst my bubble! Honestly! Thats an aged marriage. So I am about to leave on errands in Monticello. Maybe I should go to runnings first as I might bump into Ralphie. Maybe Judy will be with just to get out of the house. Then Wal-mart to get 'stuff.' Its pretty warm out here so no carhart today.

We all are slacking on food supplies it seems. I ground feed last night and only had enough soy to make a 50 pound batch.

Will have to sneak out early some day this week to get down to the elevator. It closes the same time I get off woek

I think you "women" need a separate thread to discuss chicken chore fashion. My birds were scared yesterday of me because I wore my Carhartt jacket for the first time this year. They prefer consistency in outer wear. I have found underwear color makes no difference to them nor does sock color..

Ralphie. Carhartt color talk is much better than Toenail paint color talk. Right ladies? Who dares to wear red polish during flip flop weather down to the coop?

I can attest chickens don't care about underwear color. But shockingly bright skin in the spring...does not make a rooster happy.

It is not raining near the big lake at this time. The big lake has a tendency to hold weather fronts either off or in place.
All this talk regarding birds in the house and on the bed is quite confusing to me. Those that would be involved in such activity are difficult to label, as they may seem normal in most respects? But that behavior is evidence for residence in the loony bin!
It can get cold and I don't care, but I hope it does not rain or snow until February.
Ed its all very Hee-Hawish isn't it? Granny Clampett-esque.

Kind of like shooting at vermin in the garage while a Cadillac ducks ricochets.

So tonight my DH caused some alarm telling me that one of the chicks my favorite had an eye that wasn't opening. I went straight out to check because I had never seen it but knew I should check. All eyes are open! Whew! But the one I posted pics of yesterday does have one that is sort of lazy. She will close the one and keep the other one open. Is there something I should watch for?

How old is it? You could separate her and push the electrolytes/vitamins. Mix her up some scrambled eggs. That might help her get out of her funk. If there's something wrong with her eye, try neosporin or terramycin.

It is still not raining here due to the influence of Lake Superior, but thus far I have only expended enough effort to go release the chickens. I know that winter is near because the guineas moved back in with the chickens at night as opposed to roosting in the pines. I may be safe to put the BOSS feeders back up? It is borderline as to whether the resident bears are building their new den or not at this time?
Ralphie, I have had all varieties of Chantecler at one time or another. They are all docile and good layers in my experience. The whites are of course most easily bred to show standards, and the PC are a challenge with the color, especially on the females. The buffs are a challenge also as relates to shade of buff and loose feather in some lines. I saw the photo of Mike Gilbert's pullet which won at Hutchinson, and she was outstanding.

It is that time of year when I begin to think of what I will do in the next years projects. I am tempted to go all in and get the three spangled varieties of Appenzeller Spitzhauben next spring. I talked with Dick Dickerson this summer and decided it was later than I wanted to start chicks.
I want to get back into the Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas, and should add some birds to my Buckeyes, Chanteclers and Marans. I may have too many birds when all of this is done?

I am being lazy just working the net while listening to Pandora. I am a real Pandora enthusiast and Norman Brown is playing as I type this.

What page are the appletinii's on in the SOP. I thought I had marked them. I know the silver laced ones like I have are not SOP at this time. I was just wondering what the other varieties are.

White and Buff Chanticlers would be fine, if I have enough breeding pages and Judy does not smoother me while I sleep for getting them.

I am a Pandora fan as well. Easy to make good Stations with a few thumbs ups and downs. Seems like the ads are getting fewer and farther between lately which is nice.
