Well the Charmaster furnace is getting a workout in this weather . Just put in a hunk of hedge (osage orange) . Burns hot . Most of you probably have none in your area . The banana belt probably has some .

Semester in English today...


At about 3:30 this morning I woke up to our dog barking, she has 3 barks person is here barking because something's farther away, and her my animals or territory are being threatened. This was her threatened, I woke up and was listening there was about 10 yotes on the road and hill so about 50-150 feet away from our house. Our has dog chased off the last 2 nights too.
This morning a lot of coyotes were on the move. I saw 6 in plain sight all about 1 mile in radius from each other.
My best guess is that the lion has come back. They were acting like this this summer when the lion was around too.

I feel your pain...I also have Raynauds...but not nearly as bad as you. Keep the fingers warm and circulation running. My non-medical advice is keep the blood thin with adult beverages and all is well.

I have never heard of Raynaurds before.

Judy must have it she is so cold I refuse to let her touch me (as we all know how delicate I am) at times. I would rather have an ice cube down the back than her touch me somedays.




Also a word to the wise, If you decide to walk through one of my coconut groves today wear a hard hat, frozen coconuts hurt like hades when they hit you.

Morning folks! It was -16 (without the windchill) this morning when I went out to feed everyone! I have been reading the posts about cracked/whole corn.....I have been feeding the cracked because I was told this raises their body heat when they are roosting..is this correct, am I doing it right then? I have also been giving them more walnuts, cranberries, greens and freeze dried meal worms. Their combs are looking kinda ragged right now and I can see a few will lose some points but they freak out when I try and put Vaseline on them???? Any tricks to getting it on them without causing so much trauma?

I have also been feeding the horses up in their stalls to try and keep them out of the wind at night but I have one brat who keeps chasing the other horse away from the barn! I am about to send him off to a glue factory!!!!

@ralphie you will have to let me know if your Appel...whatzits start laying in the spring, they are pretty and I want some but not if they aren't worth the price to feed them!

Siggie: Vaseline doesn't work. I tried it quite diligently my first Winter. Still had a black eschar--about 50% or more of a comb come off a New Hampshire. It was -20 every day that winter. I may as well have been working on a rock pile with a rubber hammer. After the fact a "very enlightened"

person here on BYC from the East Coast told me I should have been using bag balm. So I thought back then 4 years ago...if I have another rooster like this...this is what I'll do. Flash forward 4 years: I have bag balm purchased. Consistency is a bit waxier when it gets cold....seems less likely to rub off. I put it on my brand new Wellie cockerel and his tips are blistered and blackening. They're gone-zo. May as well let Mom Nature do her business and then I won't have to deal with it next winter again. He's missing a few layers of skin on the back blade of his comb and one of the tips has already sloughed a layer. I feel so bad for him. But I know they usually get through it fine. Cushion combs or Rose combs folks. For this friggin' frozen tundra we live in. He's a beautiful Rooster...but I know better....

Raynauds will scare the living heck out of you. I have an acquaintance who's daughter got it quite young and she rushed her to the ER. Scared her quite a bit. It's something to behold that's for sure.

I have these leather mittens that have a nice soft knit lining and insulation between the lining and the leather. DH calls them "choppers" Then I put this nice pair of soft yarn knitted mittens my mom found at a craft sale. and put those inside the choppers. Those Mittens right there...Crazy warm. All day long in subzeros...and my hands are toasty all day. They are amazing.

Hi everybody... Havent been on much... Been up at 5:30 every other morning to haul calves to the sales barn... Did pretty good this year... Also kept back a few heifers this fall... 3 blacks and a white. My grandpa told me "Go outside and pick out the heifers you think we should keep" so I did and I think I did a good job. I'm goons have to get some pics of them...

Also some sad news... We lost our orphan calf this AM... He couldn't get up this AM and by the time we were back from the sales barn he was dead... boo...

Also collected my first Buckeye eggs! Well first... I have high hopes for this egg

20 more and I'll set them lol

The roads here r terrible so haven't done anything except haul cattle and that was scary...

18 below this AM and it felt like 30 below... ick
