Surviving Minnesota!

I think I have to be done with bantams. The thought of having them is nice but (don't hate me for this bantam lovers) they are practically worthless birds. You can't really eat them, they lay tiny eggs when they do lay and they are always broody... I am gonna stick with standards... Anywayd I have replacement for Zeus cuz some people are poultry enablers here **cough**destiny**cough**

I'm feeling the same with mine

boyo we are a chatty group tonight! im tying to keep up while pulling the night shift at work.

It is the time of year we wrap up all the financial data for the calendar year and big things happen. including my bonus calculations...

On the bright side, DW and i spent a little quality time with Jillian Michaels while i was babysitting. Just enough time to break a sweat before the next thing broke and I was back to my desk.

To each their own, I won't hate you as long as you don't hate me for not liking big, clumpy chickens.

I do have to agree with you though, they are pretty useless except as pets. I believe they are some of the friendliest chickens (I might be biased though

). My sister butchers her extra bantam roosters but I have a hard time killing my pets and I can usually sell any extras I raise during the summer for a lot more than any meat I would get off them. I don't eat a lot of eggs, I usually end up giving friends my extras, (their grandkids all love the little eggs, especially at Easter). Bantams don't eat much, especially in the summer while free-ranging, so they aren't real expensive to raise. And they are just so darn cute, especially the "broody" mamas with their chicks (almost as cute as baby ducklings!) All that being said, bantams just work best for me.

I don't know if my chickens are smarter than the eagles or if the eagles just like fish better. I live by the river and see eagles fly over often and roost in the trees by the river but as far as I know, I haven't lost any chickens to them. There is a lot of underbrush for the chickens to hid in also, that might help.

ETA: If anyone is interested, the MN game breeders assoc. is having their spring swap in Hutchinson on Feb. 18th.

I am not sure if it is cold or not.

I have covered my thermometer with masking tape. I figure cold is just a state of mind and I do not look at the temp, I will not feel the cold.

Coffee and DH are coming today, She is going to get Snowflake and shop for more, I hope.

I wonder if covering the temps will keep the eggs from freezing?

Hope so yesterday we had a 2 people calling for eggs, one wanted 2 dozen another wants 5. No idea when I will finally get them. Ivie about those extra eggs you have...

@bantiesrule I find it amazing the eagles don't decimate your birds. I lose so many to those flying ( see BYC I have self control and did not say the words)... While I do not have banties, I have the 3 fufu's their eggs are small and they are smaller than real chickens I figure they might become eagle bait.

I'm always surprised, especially living by the river, that I don't loose more to all the wild critters. I have lost many, many more chickens to feral cats (mine don't bother them) and neighbors' dogs. I do have a very good pen to lock them up at night but they are free-ranging all day by themselves.
