Surviving Minnesota!

That's funny! I don't find mine to be as chatty. I have noticed my SS hens leave the roost at night when I go out to tuck them all in. They stand outside the coop like, "oh crap, it's dark out". I'm surprised an owl hasn't taken advantage of those poor choices yet.

Dominique's are a little bit lighter with their barring, right? I think the roosters are very pretty! I still want to get some Bucks this year. Where did you get your little ones from?

@lvie , have you been putting something on your RIR? I love, love, love blu-kote. I think some people use the vetericyn as well. She's lucky to have the warmer weather right now =)

My good friend Ralphie told me that Duane Urch had a large amount of extra chicks hatching. So I made the 5 1/2 hour round trip to visit Mr. Urch on Tuesday. We received a few extra Dominiques (3 to be exact) from Mr. Urch and we have 5 from Ralphie. (Ralphies hail from Urch lines as well.) So we will be showing Dominiques until the cows come home this year. Oh well....they are beautiful birds with little itty bitty pea combs. So what is not to love about them living in MN!

My son loves any kind of barred chicken but the barred rock have such large combs that we went to the Doms instead.

I love the barred rock for egg laying but we have one hen that can't be quiet and she doesn't cluck its more of a screech. Then we have the happy cluckers. (2 hens that run around clucking about their business.) The Barred Rock are my noisiest birds in the layer pen but oh well at least I know they are around.

Edited to include proper hours.

Goodmorning everyone... Have pics to post but I am being lazy....

I let the Buffies out in the coop while cleaned out their pen and HeiHeis and a fight went down lol. A Guinea walked up to the roosters dust bathing hens and jeez did he ever nail that Guinea. I wish I would have got it on video! That Guinea surprisingly got his butt whooped. Right when his hens were done dust bathing he marched them right back to their pen.

I also made a Cochin breeding pen made yesterday. I put two Bantam Blue females and a Black male in. I really like the ones blue coloring! I dont like her comb and cushion but my roo has a perfect comb and beautiful cushion.

My one BR - Gilda Radner - always has a lot to tell me! She will follow me around telling me everything any hen has been doing in that run - good or bad.

That must be a Barred rock trait. My Barred rock "Pocahontas", runs up to me and follows me around whining and complaining about everything.

Ralphie, did you get that "Pocahontas" hen from Massachusetts ? How many chicks have you hatched thus far and how many are you planning to hatch this season ?
Are you hatching any Guineas this year? It seems as though you may be less than completely enthused about them ?

I am hatching them this year again. However, this may be my last year with them. They are a pain in the arse to me.

I plan to hatch 500-700 keets. They all sell, is the only reason I keep them around. That and they eat a ton of ticks.

I have not hatched a lot of birds this year, but it is early and I have not had great hatches. I think I have 35ish Legbars hatching this week, and a few of everything else..

Including 2 PC! I want a rooster, I need a rooster or two. Hens will mature roosters take longer.

That would make sense but why when I'm not doing much activity is what's getting me, track starts on the 27 of February so I guess I'll see if it gets worse then.
I went to the chiropractor before school started to see if they could see what was wrong with my hip and knee and they said they couldn't help

, I'm thinking I just need to go and ask some athletic chiropractor. I'll ask the AD today if she knows anyone
I think sometimes yes...lack of activity weaken the muscles that are compensating...so then if they weaken (without exercise) then you are really going to feel things. I guess I would just keep moving down the line until you find somebody to help you. One can always make excuses-blame other people, but ultimately patients own greatest advocate should be themselves.

I may have mentioned this before, but my VERY GOOD and Smart chiropractor said to me one day, "Pay attention to what you are doing." So my Left hip issue is actually a stretched tendon from crossing my ankles and tucking it under my desk chair. All day like that pulls the tendon. And it's really sore at night. So I do a check with myself every so often at work. If my ankles are crossed. I quickly reset. Another thing I was having happen was swollen lymph nodes in my neck and sides of my face. One morning I woke with my hands mashed on my face. So at night I try to adjust so that doesn't happen. It's all very unconscious sometimes. Guess what. Those issues are going away now. It takes time though.

Layers,,and others that care here....

I have whined about my knee being bad for years. I had surgery on it 8-10 years ago. I thought I needed a knee replacement.

I finally went to see the Dr who sent me to the Ortho surgeon for a knee replacement. He took a look at my knee and x-rays and said my knee looked good. He thought I had an old injury or hamstring spasm.

He sent me to a Physical therapist. In my mind I was thinking waste of time and money. He started working on my leg and knee. He gave me a couple stretches to do. To make a long story short.

He found an old injury, I am guessing 30-40 year old to the side of my calf. He started working it and found a spot that felt like a large shooter marble in size deep in my muscles of the calf. He worked it over and over and over.

It hurt like crazy at the same time it felt good. Anyways 8 weeks later, I have no knee pain. What I thought was a bad knee was actually 5 inches below the knee. It seems where we feel pain is not allows where the pain or injury it.

So what BC said makes sense. Also I have had the Plantar facitidiesousoesdertedsaous she mentioned (spelling might be in error). There is a way to tape the foot that gives it support without your foot becoming dependent on it. I happen to have some of the "blanks" the foot doctor uses to tape the foot. ( that will teach him to have a pile of them laying around when Judy has a empty purse)....... We use them once every couple years when my foot acts up.

Good luck on it all,,,

Oh I'm glad you are getting your knee better! That's great!
I have used it for that . Of course kerosene or diesel fuel works if you dip the leg in it . It is a mite and needs to breathe . The oil will soak into the gunk and kill the mites .
I have been reading about Kerosene!!! It's old timey but I guess it really really works. I should get some.

Good morning.

For your warm fuzzy enjoyment.please ignore the dirty broader. I cleaned less than 12 hours ago and the little poop machines went to town again.
MNChickMom you have some beautiful little birds here. What fun. You'll have to be sure to post pics of them as they mature too. Wow.

Ralphie, 500 to 700 keets is a lot. Are they all Pearl Grey? I am surprised that you hatch that many.

If they lay late it will be less, if they lay early that will be about the number I will get..

Unless I get tired of people and just moth ball everything.

Which is very possible. I am not the old patient person I use to be. I have things I want to say and Judy mainly stops me..

Iike:

NO. I really do not care if I sell the eggs enough to meet you in Worthington....

Yes, it is a long ways from your home to here, however it is just as far for me to drive there....

No, I will not throw in an extra dozen chicks.

You want me to guarantee every egg will hatch?

I understand you have hatched eggs before, I still will not guarantee every egg will hatch.

Yes, the chicks do cost more than the eggs. That is because unlike you I cannot hatch every egg..

No, My chickens are not vegan.

I have no idea when the Turkeys will start laying eggs....

I have no idea when the guineas will start laying...

Yes, my guineas are extremely noisy....

I am sorry, I have limited numbers of Marans. They are freeloading welfare cases and refuse to pay their way.....

Yes, that is a lot of money for a day old chick.

I doubt you will find a White legbar cheaper.

Why are you calling me for the 9th time and asking the same question you did the last 8 times.

Yes, I need a deposit before I hatch 50 chicks for you. How do I know you're not like the last guy that stuck me with all those birds?

Thank you all for letting me vent...I am thinking of making Holms my sales manager and let him talk to people, he is young and still likes people....
