Surviving Minnesota!

Jerry. I have a question and am betting you can answer it.

How well does feather sexing work? Does it work on all breeds? Is there a difference between birds as to the percentage of times it is correct. The times I have used it I think a coin flip or ring on a string would have worked better.

Just curious, I am thinking about trying it again...

Holm I have a different method of breeding caged birds, About once a week I gently place the hens in the roosters cage. The hens start to tremble when I pick them out and head to the roosters...The rooster starts dancing when he sees me bring a hen to his cage.

I can barely get the hen out of my arms before the rooster jumps the hen. Weinerhead is definitely no Ed when it comes to manners with the girls. However, Weinerhead has stopped being a Weinerhead to me and actually seems to love me now. I can pick him up carry him and put him into a cage and he does fight me a bit, he almost jumps into my arms...

My little too can breed them they just can't reach if you know what I mean. And they have so dang much fluff and I hate to trim it too much. They just aren't made for natural breeding. And Idk of the Orps can with the Roos little foot issue.

My plans today might change a little... Humane society called... They have a sweet little Pit bull Terrier cross that is so dang cute that is looking for a home. 8 months old and a beautiful brindle color.

A question for the bird experts..

Let's say an old man with poor eyesight in low light conditions or because of stupidity. Left a Cuckoo Maran egg in a carton with 11 Dominique eggs to hatch...

Further lets say ever egg hatched.... How would said old man tell the difference between the Maran Chick and the Don Chicks. Do not say the comb. The old man tried that and could see no differences...

So someone has a 1 in 12 chance of getting a Maran in there Doms...OR I might just be forced to keep them all.........

Also I think I have 6 Appenzeller Spitzes!!! But I can only ID three 100%.. They are ambitious and jumped into the Yokohama section. I think I picked them out, again, only time will tell for sure. (hopefully in a week I can id these little jumpers for sure)

Does not work for us . Hatcheries maintain 2.lines to make it work if I recall correctly .
edited to add . They use a fast feathering male line and a slow feathering female line . crossing them as these are sex linked traits . Why are you trying sexing again ? the Legbars auto sexing was no advantage .

I mean no disrespect to anyone with this post !!

As someone who has multiple degrees from a prestigious University, I have come to the conclusion that multiple degrees are not indicative of superior intelligence. Many that I met while in said University that also attained multiple degrees have led me to that conclusion. It is good that people have the ambition and self discipline to do the study and pass the requirements for the degrees, and I assume in most cases it is of benefit financially.

Not a single one of my classmates has also gone on to be also accepted into the "Mensa Society".

Ralphie, I am not an expert on Cuckoo Marans or Dominiques, and I assume you Marans do not have feathered legs as per French Standard. A guess is that the Marans would show somewhat more light coloration as in mottled? Not a stark difference but perhaps noticeable . If that does not work, you are on your own.

I believe the legs are different colors. Maran's are pink/slate and Doms are yellow. I believe I asked you the same question many months ago trying to tell apart my Doms cuckoo Marans and Barred Rocks. Not at home to look. I am in the banana belt presently.

Just wondering if I could. I get so many Urbanites that want chickens that are sexed. I would just double the price on the girls and eat the boys.

I end up eating the LB boys too. Except the white ones which I can sell, because they do not sex, regardless of what some people on BYC say about them...
