Surviving Minnesota!

Bogtown- when I think Bogtown, I think Waskish. Anyway,

The coop should be relatively sheltered from the NW.

I'd like to maybe have the kids show at some point if they have interest. We're on the edge of town, just .5 acre. Wife grew up on a farm, but didn't show.

Breed is yet to be determined. I figure a couple of Orpingtons for sure. Would like to see if I can track down some chanteclers. Just learned of them a little while ago, but I'm intrigued.

Ivie i always kept Dixie in her own broody coop. Albeit probably nobody will mess with her growliness and such ... layers is right in that the chicks have alot of learning and agility they learn in a week. I tried to take chicks out before a week and Dixie would take them right back to the coop. She knew. After a week she brought them out herself.
I'm so excited for you! It's a fun precious time. Get out your camera!

Your Rosie is the same as Dixie was. She'd let me handle the eggs. Growly but I could touch. But the baby chicks she'd whack me. Awesome! Lol. A good momma. Keep an eye on her though... she might make mistakes leaving chicks uncovered or whatever. Uh... I'm so wanting to come down and watch chick tv!

Chanticleers are an excellent cold hardy breed with a small comb. No issues there. Buff Orpington will have a large single comb. Lots of fluff to protect the body though in winter. But we just had a Member lose an Orpington rooster to the heat. A consideration I made was using a lot of shade for placement of my coop. Heat is a larger worry for chickens than cold. Insulation can help keep a coop cool too.

Butting in here to encourage you to check out the Chanteclers more. I have them, I love them, and I'll probably end up with an all Chantecler flock eventually. They're really a fantastic breed for this climate.

I'm sold. If I can find each color option, maybe I'd do them exclusively.

Do you suppose it's best to wait until spring to start the flock at this point?
