Surviving Minnesota!

Good luck holm!

I'm heading to St. Cloud today. Papa in the hospital with 3 brain lesions and a spot on his bronchi neurosurgery on Friday. Prayers needed. He's a tough old marine so hoping to get him through this and home fast.

Jerry I'll make you a little garden on the mound if you want...:sick let me know how it all tastes.

No backstraps. She disappeared fast as she appeared. Plus I didn't want to wade in the poison ivy. Oh and no man with a buck knife.
:hugs prayers for a speedy recovery :fl

Morning . BC the chicks are doing great . No heat since coming home . The old hoop house greenhouse / brooder is not really chick tight . They started free ranging . So I opened the door . All went back in . So far so good . Processed tomatoes into sauce yesterday . Need to can it today . About 5 quarts . DW wants to use some today . So maybe 3 quarts to can . Thinking of buying some canning tomatoes to get it over in a hurry . Janet uses a lot of sauce in a year .

Well so far there is a lot of nice birds. Some Silkies and some really really really nice Cochins that I am pretty sure will do great lol. I will have to take some pics for you guys.

Hello all! I'm up in Duluth, just starting with this whole chicken thing! We've got an Easter Egger that we adopted, a few years old, and we are treating her bumble foot with the help of our awesome vet. And our others we raised from chicks, still only 12 weeks old. Turns out our Polish-Polly/Paul is a rooster... Not allowed in city limits, if we get caught. (Anyone want him??) So then we also have a BuffOrp:Buffy, Black Australorp:Astrid, Black Sexlink:Blackie, and Barred Rock:Opal.

One of the Blue Ameraucana's is broody. She might need a bath. She's been setting since last week. It might be harder to break her. She's pretty ferocious. I might bleed on this one. Dixie my buff silkie was just growly. Miss Kitty, the Blue Ameraucana is a little more T-Rex. So a bath of water is probably in order for her. Maybe put her in the garage with the lights too.

To our new followers and soon to be chicken owners. Read, Read, Read. Coop first. Chicks after. And know that after you've read...chickening will still humble you. Be prepared for that. BYC is full of knowledgable people and people that 'think' they know it all. So read several threads of a topic to get the feel for what is right and what is a load of chicken manure. Also understand that what works in West Virginia and Florida does not work here in Minnesota as far as weather and wintering chickens.

I only use litter in my run. Which is only used when the snow is on the ground. One winter it was for 6 months straight. Another winter was 2 months. Pine shavings in the coop. We have clay/loam here. The run is covered...so I think there is some shading and rotting going on there. But it's so thick that it's hard to see. I will need fresh this year though. Just for comfort...cleanliness feeling.. that I need. LOL.

Smucked a fawn last night with the car. Braked hard and almost missed her but Pushed my headlight in a little. Little crack in the bumper. Dang things. Feel bad...but I just got that car... grrr.
Excuse me BC - just a little confused. You feel bad about hitting the fawn or about the new car damage? :frow

I didn't plant any tomatoes this year, but had a bunch in the freezer from last year. I processed 10 pints of sauce last night, have 10 more in the canner now, and will do the last batch when I get home from town. I'm going to keep an eye on the rummage sale sites and go to the local farmer's market to get some fresh eating ones.
