Surviving Minnesota!

It's hard being new. You research and research. Heed warnings from people and then you get other opinions on things you never thought you could learn more on the subject of chickens. I've been put in my place here on BYC about a zillion times. It's humbling but then you kind of learn these things and how to act around chicken keepers... (talk about beer... or mikes wine coolers... :lau)

It's ok and it's ok to learn.

Ralphie where did you learn about the shrimp mushrooms ? I looked them up it says the honey mushroom likes to grow near them . Never seen either .

You have 8 weeks to condition the birds.
If the blue pullet is looking decent by September 20 she will be entered but so far it is not looking like it

No, i have a general contractor. The bank wouldnt allow me to be my own GC. So i found a GC that would sub out work to me. I just finished up all the low voltage and network cabling this morning. ready for the drywall and insulation guys to come this week now!
Fun! Lots of work but its really cool to see it come together

I found them growing in the woods near my runs. and I remembered in my old grey matter something about them being good to eat. It took me a day to find them online and in the books. They are thought to be a parasite on Honey mushrooms some books say they are an aborted honey mushroom most say they are an aborted version of Entoloma Abortivium. Most the books recommend us amateurs not pick or eat the non-aborted version as there are too many look alikes that would make a last meal for us...

I did read they should be fried up crispy or carmelized for the best taste. That is what we did with them. They taste almost like the lobsters we got with BC last year. They look like popcorn shrimp.

When I read about them it said to pick the fresh ones and leave the old ones. It said the old ones would be soft and wet...They are not lying they are mushy wet and break up if you pick the old ones up.

Apparently, I should just keep my mouth shut, also. I came on here hoping to make friends with my fellow Minnesotan chicken keepers, but guess I just ended up offending people instead.
You're good. I dropped out of the blue a couple of months ago with questions on hearty breeds for MN. I have found the chickeners here to be extremely helpful and encouraging. That doesn't mean they can't be challenged on some things.

You might have stepped on a bit of a land mine, but you're good. In fact, these folks many times may be the start of whatever search you might have. Birds, cures, you name it.

Btw....still no eggs and impatient.

Speaking of eggs..

Anyone here want to try their hand at hatching toads? I am over run with eggs again. Otherwise I will be forced to hatch more chicks, just when I was vowing to cut back on hatching.
If it were spring, I'd happily take you up on that. I'd love some toads! Unfortunately, I have had some predator issues this summer and haven't had time to figure out how my chickens were slaughtered in my one coop that was LOCKED and CLOSED for the night. (I'm guessing mink, and when I get the coop cleaned out I'm sure I'll find how it got in.)
