I have found giant puffballs and shaggy mane mushrooms . Ground is not frozen here yet . I do not care for puffballs . Did not pick shaggy manes . DW and grandson will partake .

Lucky you, I only had a couple small puffballs all year. Puffballs are one on my favorites.

Shoot wish I would've known that you enjoy puffballs that much. I had at least 8-10 of them as big as a dinner plate this year.

Before I let the DS out with the lawnmower I will have to do a pre lawn inspection. Normally, We find them on our front lawn with lots of shade, or near the cedar tree in the back yard. I have never heard of mushrooms liking cedar trees but then again...the only mushroom experience I have gleened has been from this site.

Did you dry them? I have thought about chipping or using the planer to make my own but have been leery because of moisture content.

They were damp so they went in the run. And one bag full disappeared quite fast into the leaves and hay. So it's hard to see now. But it still adds to the mix and for it I'm grateful on keeping my chickens feet off cold hard frozen black mud.

Jerry those Puffies are biggun's. MNChickMom I can see DS running over those big puffballs gleefully on the JD. LOL. Love it.

LOL - I was just thinking 'hm m m m I wonder if possums are good for stew? when I hoped back on this thread to read whatever else anyone has to say. And there you are Bogtown! I was prepared to strike it this a.m. IF I found it with the spade shovel - you know, the one with the sharp pointy scoop. But from what you said Jerryse - that probably would not have worked. I have to work my self up to killing a critter and the thought of what it could do to my flock has me ready and willing. I do have a 22 - somewhere. Its probably time to dig it out and relearn how to use it again. I was a good shot in my earlier years with the thing but that was 40 years ago. Practice.

I have always nostalgically though of possum in the south lands... ( like not Minnesota) and to see them is surreal for me in this state. Was it kind of cute ivie? Lol.
I wonder if possum stew is good or something you need to watch Beaver Fever for...?

We have lots of them in my part of the state. I personally find them adorable, and with the amount of ticks they eat, I feel they deserve to live, even if they've been found near the chickens. Our dog just had a young one all roughed up, and I took him back to our pond and let him go. I have a soft spot for them for some reason. Anything that is something like 98% (this number is probably off, but it's very unlikely for them to have it) resistant to rabies, and loves to dine on ticks is A ok in my book.

You must feel the same about possums as I do porcupines, I've never seen one in the wild. We don't have them in this part of the state.
