Surviving Minnesota!

Layers, nice deer there. Big body and you can't eat da rack.
Holms, I prefer the Cornish. I would have them if it were not for the need to AI.
Ralphie and Jerry must be sleeping in today.
It is my desire that all post things of interest early in the week, as I will be occupied Friday through Sunday with the activities of the Northern Lights Show and Auction.
For those that wish to show birds and reap a financial reward it would be the venue for you. Champion bird wins $2,700 as I recall.
For those curious you can access our web site at northernlights22.com.

Come on now. Post away.

Wow, pretty impressive.

Ed I will have to jump on and see the high roller ‘chicken dinner winner’.
More mild days ahead. I love that!!! Birds are out free ranging.

Ralphie might be talking to his free loaders. And Jerry preparing his next wild game dupe for the missus?

Must share. So I’ve been getting calls for soap. Gifting season is upon us soon. I wanted to try goat milk soap. So this lady north of me had goats and then gave them away as she wanted to get out of them. But she stopped at their new farm and picked up some milk and the lady gave to her for free along with some goat cheese.
So when I then got to her house she transferred the free to me and gifted me a 1/2 gallon of goat milk. One wheel of cheese and 4 dozen pullet eggs!
I bought her raspberry jam. (To die for good). What a haul though!

Did some inventory yesterday and found that I had 17 roosters and keep cockerels.... I went through and tried to figure who I could cull out but I can't find any. I have two Yoki cocks and the youngest is turning brown/rusty on his shoulders so I don't know if I should breed him or not? Other than him I have two EEs we can eat and I really like the one from Ralphie...

Holm ours are the opposite almost. The Muleys are usually so much smarter. Especially the does

I thought we had had this discussion and decided the male of the species is always smarter....

I remember because @MNChickMom agreed so wholeheartedly with me.

EJB that is fairly close to me, might have to venture over...I had visions of my Dom Cockerel winning Xmas money until I went to the site ad saw it was just mini-birds. I was thinking of going to New Ulm this weekend to look at birds, but this is closer. I am not showing in New Ulm because I was suppose to have surgery tomorrow, but it has been postponed due to complications
A couple of recent pics. My cockerel. Other than his crooked toe, are there any big issues from a culling standpoint? Curious if I should be planning on keeping him or if I should hope for a replacement this spring.

This girl has these white marks on her head. Anything I should be concerned about? Maybe just dirty?

Interesting birds Tfred!

The cockerel is young. He looks like he will grow into a good body type. They should be very wide across the back when mature. I have XL hands. I need the largest gloves I can find. When I reach my hand spread out across the back I like to not be able to go over the edges of their backs. Give him time he will get there.

I find the color interesting as well. He is a little more red than Mike's normal cocks. I happen to like the red. The judges and Mike do not....hence I lose... I am now trying to breed up some darker birds.

The black striping on the shaft of the feathers in the hackles (head to neck) area should be minimum. Same as the the saddlefeathers.. (area where a saddle would go, between wings and tail that droop over the body).

I happen to have the SOP right here with me...I always have it with me....(nerd)..It says on the color:

Hackle: web of feather, lustrous greenish black with a narrow lacing of medium shade of rich brilliant red;shaft black.

It then says almost the same for the saddle feathers,,,

BUT the judges want the black over the red for some reason. Maybe Jerry knows why. I have given up on telling the judges they are wrong..:lau

I see he has one toe that needs a trim. I would get it soon and maybe it will come in a bit. Maybe not. Knucklehead was trimmed a lot by the girl with the new hairdo :lau who is never going hunting again......and his toe never did come in.

I am wondering if the color is off from the lens, the legs are lighter than I would expect which means everything could be off in the picture.

I think he is a good bird overall. When I point out these things people think I am judging too harshly. SORRY!! I pick my own birds apart the same way. Ask Holm, he steals my culls and wins.....the jerk

I am trying to remember which way it goes BUT if I recall correctly that rooster should throw excellent penciled hens. Banty do you recall? Is it the redder roosters that are suppose to add the penciling?
