Surviving Minnesota!

Sorry to hear of everyone's losses! I've lost 2 more of the young scovies. I had 6 that were hatched in groups of 2 over a couple weeks. The oldest 2 look fine, and the last small one I'm just holding my breathe to see if he can pull through. They almost made it to the end of this. It's supposed to be 32 here for the high on Sunday. Ir's going to feel like a heat wave! They are a good couple months old so I thought they could handle it better. Just too young I guess. Hope everyone else's can hold on as well. We almost made it through. It was just announced that it's 10 above here!

Wow! Sorry to hear of all the losses especially all the breeders. We have lost our fair share of old bitty's this cold snap. (Hatchery stock 2+ years old so no real loss.)

I had to do the unthinkable last week.....I BOUGHT EGGS FROM THE STORE. Eeek I can't believe the pale yellow yolks.

Hatching update: I moved the first batch to the hatcher yesterday.....I may need to do some vent feather triming on the buff orpingtons. I threw out 16 infertiles. Locked down only 2 Buff Orps, 4 Buckeyes, and 2 Rhode Island Reds. In my fall test hatches the Buff Boy was doing his job and I have a 8 chicks that are 6 weeks old so I know he has it in him.

This morning just before dawn I registered -14 on the Temperature thingy that doesn't seem to move, but the wind was gently blowing.

One kid has school today and one has off today. (Thankfully, the kid that is off needs to be cooled down a bit, so Grandpa offered to have him assist in clearing and bedding the steer yards, and taking down Christmas decorations. With this on your agenda can you believe he had the tenancity to argue about bringing long underwear, jeans and insulated coveralls.....must be my husband coming out in him.

First Off, he seems to take after his Mother a lot,,,,,:lau:lau

On to the hatching..

I put 68 eggs in the incubator. I had a dozen or so quitters the rest were non-starters. Out of 176 eggs.

So Ms Vicki and I are have about the same hatch rate going into the hatchers 30ish percent.. Which is not bad for a winter hatch. I have had worse.

I had one turkey egg out of 11 that started...It quit too. So no bug eyed baby pictures Memphis..

I will have to wait and see what the numbers are after the hatch, but I am going to be forced to have an Early Feb hatch. I really wanted only one hatch this year. I could put some in today,,,,,,BUT I would not be enjoying life if I did. Even though these are my chickens, and I feed and care for them 95% of the time......and the WWD complains I have too many.....and I collectthe eggs...She sells them. She has some ready to sell, I think she said someone was coming for 6 dozen eggs. I could plant them today....BUT I fear the emasculator might make an appearance here if I did.

I ordered another bottle of Maraks vaccine. This will be the third bottle. The last two the post office has managed to ruin.
