Surviving Minnesota!

-14 at my place but the wind creates wind chill of -32 they say on the local weather ?
I hate to say that I am becoming used to it and not bothered by it that much.
My birds seem to be relatively not bothered by it? No casualty's and none looking to be phased by it.
Dealing with the hard water is a pain in the aspirins, but I refuse to use heat for the water. I honestly wonder if the heated water is a source of problems?

:yesss: for PC chicks. May they all be winners. :fl
If the water is warm yes it could cause problems but if it's just above freezing I don't think so.
Agree. My birds enjoy lukewarm water, so I am not going to give them cold water. I don't heat it though so it rapidly becomes cold water.

When I was keeping rabbits outdoors I had one that wouldn't really drink unless I gave her warmed water. Cold/cool water? Nope. Yuck. So, the spoiled bun got provided with what she wanted.

I thought my thermometer was broken this morning it read -4. There was only one digit to the right of the negative sign. So I thumped it a few times and walked over to the good ole mercury thermometer and all be jiggers it only read -2.....but it also hangs just outside my window attached to the house.

We should have chicks today as well.... I didn't see/hear anything this morning. Humidity has been holding right at 59% in the hatcher so I am a little on edge today. Yesterday, my fancy upgrade to the water system came in the mail. I can't wait to add the bucket contraption for future hatches.

Holms - Sorry to hear of all your losses.

As for heated waterer versus non-heated waterers.....I am on the heated dog dish band wagon, especially for the small breeder pens. I even trained my 5 week old buff orpington chicks to drink from the heated dog dish without filling it with shavings. The Toads are the only not so intelligent creatures that tend to slop water everywhere and are making a royal frozen mess of the heated pet bowl. I don't notice much evaporation.

Right now I’m in the dog bowl with rubber bowl inserted waterer. Junior just a dragging those dead wattles through it. Icicles on his chest. Not a fan. Both of my little giant nesting bases cracked for the alternating 1 gallon founts. Pita. (Pain in the aspirins) :gig. Not a fan but less messy. I may just make a special run to town for fount bases and feed and bedding. On line Two of the bases were 17 with s +h. I know they are under 3 a piece. Gas paid for right there.

Held juniors wattles in my hand to de-ice and he about fell asleep. Poor baby is sick of it. He’s getting lighter. Little weaker when he struggles me when I pick him up. Arg. Hate that. He got spoiled this morning with breakfast up at the house.

You know Dad has mentioned just warming the water a bit to me as well. I think it does sooth them in this cold. Old farmer remembers his stuff.
