Surviving Minnesota!

Judy had to work today. She left about 7:30. She "got" the chicken door when she left. "got" is the term we use for opening it, so the other one of us does not have to worry about getting it.

I have not seen a bird outside yet today. With the wind and snow I did not really expect to see my Prima Donas to be out in this weather.

I went to see how they were doing. They are packed into the far corner of the coop. Scared of the weather.

Please ignore the dirty coop. Spring cleaning time should be here in a month or two.

Morning (kind of),
Currently we are not having snow or blizzard conditions, although we are still in a warning until 7:00 pm. Looks like about 9" so far, and if radar is correct, we have more snow coming up from the south for a few hours, then clearing later this afternoon.

Update: 9 chicks. Two eggs appear to have no action or movement.

Kids are way anxious to hold chicks. I told them we have to wait at least until they're dried off and fluffed out, probably not until tomorrow.

How long do I give the last two eggs to have action?

I try to wait until 36-48 hours after the first one hatches. Albeit, I am hatching different breeds all at the same time which cause for some to be earlier and some to be later.

Newborn chicks can survive up to 3 days on the yolk sack.

I was visiting with some old breeders that have had birds most of their life and they strongly disagree with leaving babies in too long... Some people say don’t open the incubator at all and some say take them babies put once they’re dry... Idk... I usually take dry babies out 24 hours after the first one hatches..
