Surviving Minnesota!

Hey all! came digging around my old BYC account looking for some old chicken photos and figured i would pop by and say hey!

Things are great on the farm and busy as always, but i wouldn't have it any other way. Chicken math is at work as always and we are running right around 120 hens these days. cranking out 30+ dozen eggs a week. 5 Hereford cattle out in the pasture right now, all my hard work has paid dividends. Made our first ever cut of hay this morning, so that is a new adventure, too! Happy to see the same crew around here. Still think of you guys from time to time. @duluthralphie especially as our 'Minnesota BAs' crank out a blue egg every now and again. Hatched 8 chicks out a few weeks ago in our annual kindergarten class partnership. Always fun to have chicks brooding in the kitchen lol.

Hey Klop!I was just thinking of you the other day while visiting with someone about grazing cattle... Made me wonder if you ended up finishing your pastures..

We are getting ready to cut our first crop of the year as well. How many acres are you doing?? Are you guys running a cow/calf operation or finishing Steers?

Do you sell the majority of your eggs? If so do you sell at farmers markets or Craigslist, Facebook Etc.?

We have one cow and calf and 3 steers. On the hunt for another cow/calf but its getting a tad late for that. Ultimately looking to have 3 cows to breed, 3 yearlings, and 3 calves each summer.

Eggs we sell to a built up customer base and at the farmers market. Recently have tapped into the facebook market place and have picked up a few sales.

Whats new with you?

Jerry sorry to read about the problems with predators. Safe travel on your way to the lake.
Layers congrats on awards.
Klop good to see your post, as I was concerned you may have passed on from the agricultural community ?
BC those are well trained hens, as mine are jumping on top of one another in their efforts to be first out.
Ralphie I don't recall telling you that, but at my age there is much I don't recall.

Nice to see you back! I am going to have to message you today. Your egg laying business sounds like what I want to build up this year!

Not much here. Still running a 20 head operation. If everything pans out we will be able to expand the herd to around 30 cows. So we are going to be busy...

On the poultry front we are downsizing... And then we will be uprising again lol.. Getting out of layers and into breeding... Currently we are breeding LF Buff Cochins, Buff Orpingtons and BBS Sumatras..

Are you guys going to use AI to get those cows bred back? What are your plans with the heifer calves? Finish or raise up and sell? Will you sell finished steers? Is your plan to run straight Hereford or maybe outcross to get good hybrid vigor? I know the sales barns around here love a good black baldy calf.
