Surviving Minnesota!

ILL, if you don't mind a question or two :

When you started to breed them did you get show quality birds to begin with, or did you just keep breeding until you got the traits you wanted? I ask as one of my goals is breeding Jersey Giants, and I keep reading that most hatchery birds are pretty underwhelming when full grown.

Thanks!
Always start with Quality birds from a breeder

I started with birds from a breeder and if you are very serious about this I suggest going with a breeder. Do your research when finding a breeder I was recomended to a certain unnamed breeder by many people. I was not at all impressed with the quality of birds, leakage in the blacks, poor color in the blues. So I called Rick Klehr last year and thats who most of my birds are out of. I have bought a one bird from another source along the way, and this fall I am doing some trading to better my blacks. And buying more whites from 2-3 people. If you aren't serious into breeding and showing, yet, I would maybe buy a couple SQ(show quality) or BQ(breeding quality) birds just to try and better yours, that way you are not to invested and can start slowly and go from there. However, I wouldn't get into it to fast. I had and started out with BBS(blue, black, splash) and it ended up not working out and 3 years later I am trying to sell all of my Blues and Splashes, which is a pain because of my location. So think carefully do your research and talk to as many people as possible

Thanks so much for the reply! I'll have to look into getting better stock. I've got 15 JG's coming from MurrayMcMurry the second week of October, and wouldn't mind adding some quality into those. It isn't a money thing for me (honestly I don't care if I sell any, as the ones I don't want I'll either keep for eggs or meat), more of for the challenge of it. If that goes well then I'd looking into other breeds.

Thanks again!

FINALLY got a pullet egg. 24 weeks.

I hage gotten birds from numerous different hatcheries and McMurray has always had the best quality! Hopefully you come to Hutch so you can meet and talk to lots of breeders!
