If his soil is acidic, adding lime may help. If his soil is basic, adding lime will make it worse.Go get 100 lbs of lime and blend it into your garden.
OK story about radishes going to tops . Dad planted by moon signs . Dark of the moon for radishes . I remember one year his brother Otto lived next door and planted his radishes . Dad said wrong sign I'll wait until dark of the moon . Otto said I plant in the ground not on the moon . Otto's all went to tops and dad's made roots . My take on it is radishes and turnips in the spring are iffy . Planted in the fall when days are getting shorter they do better . Never seem to bolt to seed . Lots of stuff reacts to day length . Mustard family also . Chinese cabbage fall only .I have no idea. I can’t say they burn up they just don’t like it here. They are in extremely rich soil.
I mixed about 200 yards of compost into my garden a few years ago. Most thing grow better now.
