I am new to this group and found this thread. I am from Central Minnesota. We purchased 10 acres a few years ago and we are getting chickens tomorrow. We ordered 8 female rainbow dixies. Anyone have this bread? I will have tons of questions especially around the weather and moving them to the coop even if I have to put a heat lamp in there...having them in the house longer than 4 weeks seems like it will begin to get messy. Any thoughts would be great. Sorry if I didn't post in this thread right, I am trying to figure out the UI.

I have read some posts on here who say they are good layers with large eggs. I am getting them mostly for eggs. I bought them female only so if I get a boy, he will go back for a female. You posted just fine.
Rainbow dixies are a dual purpose breed.
Are you getting these as layers or to eat?
They are a mellow bird but you will not get an abundance of eggs from them.
I have had them and used them in other crosses. The name Rainbow Dixie is a fancy name the hatcheries attach your the birds to sell them.
They are not a recognized breed. Every hatchery can use a slight variation of the name or even uses different crosses to make them.
They are a large bird so the hens will do well in the cold. The boys will do ok. But expect the combs to become frostbitten and trimmed a little.
I would bet you get a boy in your eight girls.

My experience is that vendors exaggerate the egg laying capabilities of the breeds of chicken they are selling. It's called advertising.Where are you getting them from?
They might send you a female to replace the male, but they won’t take a chick back.
That would be a bio-hazard to everyone that buys their chicks and illegal under USDA and state regulations.
As I said I have owned them, they will give you 3 eggs, maybe 4 a week for the first season. The second season a couple eggs a week. By the third season you will have forgotten what their eggs look like.
They will stop laying sooner than the egg laying breeds. I had one that lived to be nearly 6 years old. Of course, the last three years she was a complete freeloader, not laying any eggs.
However, I still liked her, she was friendly and the “Eve” of all my toads.
Jerry or R2elk would most likely know more, they are far better read and have more experience than I have.

NO!!! "They" wouldn't let them print it (say it on TV, radio, ....) if it wasn't true!My experience is that vendors exaggerate the egg laying capabilities of the breeds of chicken they are selling. It's called advertising.
