Surviving Minnesota!

Wonderful! So we can talk more about that later please just let me know the date as soon as you decide.

Deciding soon is not something I do well. I have not even thought about ordering birds yet.

I am thinking about summer though. I am trying to decide if I want to "buy" a stall at the farmers market in Elk River. I wish I had someone to go in on one with me.

I am thinking of selling eggs, chickens, turkeys and veggies. ( my Excess ones.) Every week is a little often If I could every other week it would be perfect.

I have been reading the rules, as I read them I can sell smoked chickens and turkeys there as long as I use wood I "raised". I have a whole apple tree cut into smoking pieces. I was thinking of Processing 5-10 chickens a week or every other to sell there.

Make sure you read the state rules on selling processed (i.e. Butchered) meat. My understanding is that you can only sell them from your farm, not at an outside location such as a farmers market, unless you are inspected and licensed. It has been 6-8 months since I read it so definitely don't take my word for it. I would just hate to see you get in trouble. A family was selling cheese at the market we sell at and one day the USDA came and shut them down because they weren't using mechanical refrigeration which is required for dairy products and that really caused a buzz at the market.

I don't know if there are fines or not but I know they haven't been back to the market since.

I will re-read them, I thought if you used an electric freezer you were ok.

I thought I had seen something about that in the rules, but I could be wrong.

Even if you cannot sell them there is a good place to show your wares for a sale from the farm.

Yes, that would be a great place to advertise. Perhaps you could even make the sale there, then have them pickup at the farm. I will have to re-read as well. Maybe you could find a loophole if you are allowed to deliver them. It would also be interesting to know the difference between a raw/uncooked chicken vs a smoked chicken in terms of rules.

It is all 'The Man' holding us down!

Yeppers, hate to have us cut in on the money the big corporations make, ruin the monopoly....

If I recall, something were ok, some things not. SaurKraut was ok. Jelly was not. I do not recall what it said about meat. I am guessing smoked meat would be a no no. BUT I thought I read something about it...time to go check.

Interesting. Several people sell jellies and canned foods at our market. One lady sells only canned soups and stews. I do know that they all have a similarly worded sign at their table saying their foods are not inspected.

I'm not sure how you could ever make money at that though due to the costs of jars and lids.

I was wrong, I found an exemption for jelly..

I also found smoked birds are out. they have to be whole and not cut up.

I could not copy and paste so I snapped a picture of what I found.

Good find. I will have to look and see what I was looking at. I do know there is a special label you have to attach to your birds listed them as exempt (I think it eludes to that in your picture) I seem to remember reading that even if you are exempt and don't have to be inspected, if somebody complains to the right people they have a right to inspect you and your processing setup. When I get some time later I will find the page I was reading
