Yes, and safer.

While safety is a concern the cost of running a 250w heat lamp versus a heating pad is the big thing for me.

As best I can tell it is 60w for the heating pad when it is on high, lower settings are less. It does not say for sure. I looked online for it.


The other thing I like is it gets the birds into a normal day and night cycle instead of 24 hour light.

It has just occurred to me that the mama brooder is essentially a miniature version of the ohio brooder (except the ohio brooder uses heat lamps) I built an ohio brooder last year and used it to brood 68 chicks fairly successfully. We had some ambient temp swings that were hard to deal with and resulted in a couple smothered, but overall the theory is sound. With the many heat levels of the heat pad, you can account for changing temps better than trying to guess at what combo of 125w and 250w bulbs will work.

The difference is in the way the heat is transferred to the chick.

A heat bulb uses radiant heat. The heating pad radiates very little heat. The chick snuggles up to the heating pad for warmth. The heat transfer is done by physical contact. Putting a thermometer in the cave will only give you a reading around 80, even on high.

I was worried that was too low for baby chicks, then I learned from the people on Blooie's thread one of the beauties of it is the lack of radiant heat, and the bird snuggling up to the pad like they would their mother. The new one I am making will be even closer to the ground so the new borns can crawl under it. They really seem to like the snuggling part better than sitting in the heat of a lamp.

Idk I just got done talking with Minnie and she said they dont really fit into any classes.
