Surviving Minnesota!

Hey all, I have been a pile today.  Either picked up a stomach bug last night or food poisoning.  either way i havent made it too far from the bed or bathroom until just a bit ago.

I went out to lock up the girls tonight and had an interesting go of it.  I have 2 BA hens trying to play broody and then I picked up this egg from the nest box.  It has no shell and has some sort of a tail?  there was also an egg yolk in the nest with no noticeable white or shell.  have you ever seen anything like this?

Would love to comment on everyone's post but honestly I'm too exhausted . But I do love reading them.. Took 3 trips to the farm today. Loaded another pod. Dug up 6 trees and lots flowers. And last load took the girls over to their new home. They did not like being stuffed in boxes . And it was no treat train to catch them either . Of course strawberry came right up to me and let me pick her up so she was easy but after being stuck in the box she might change her mind on letting me hold her Again. Lol.. I put all of them up on the roost just so they would know they were there but I did end up taking the littler chickens off the roost and put them on the floor I was afraid they would hurt themselves . This is their first night altogether being free in the same area . Hope the big girls are nice to the little ones .

I had someone laying eggs like that last summer. I did lose a couple hens over that heat spell we had in July and I haven't seen the bad eggs since so the layer of the eggs must have died. I do not remember what folks said it was though. Shoot. Sorry!

We picked an egg yesterday that was torpedo shaped but also lump, had rings, and was
Unsymmetrical. I wonder is a gem was kinda sorta bound but managed to work it out and this was the follow up?

I guess I wouldn't know. Not sure. I haven't had to deal with an egg bound hen. I am not sure why we get some of those odd shaped eggs or the layering up of shell like rings. I still have lots to learn! :) I believe with the pics I posted of my rubbery eggs with tails Minnie said something about reproductive tract issues. Do you have hatchery laying hens? I am told repeatedly that the hatchery hens will have laying issues. Perhaps that is what I am dealing with since all mine are hatchery.

Sorry about your cow Holm. So sad.
Cute pics of the babies though! Thanks four sharing.

Ivie, I hope sc continues to get better!

They look wonderful in their new home coffee. Had they been able to see but not touch prior to today? Good luck!

I've had rubber eggs before (soft or no shell) I just get one here and there. Usually on the roost, at night. I did have one girl die from what I believed was reproductive issues. She always laid rubber or soft shelled eggs. Never got it right. The only other chicken that I get one here or there from is Fi, my Golden commet. She lays 6 out if 7 days, so I think it just takes a lot out of her. Never had one with a tail though...

Whats Hwy 169 Princeton? And what is that a picture of under your name? It looks like a meteor soaring through the night sky - I bet the real explanation will be better than that - LOL.

Lol. I was traveling on that stretch of highway a few days ago ivie. And thought I'd let all my cluster of chicken pals know I was in their neck of the woods.

Here jerryse: I have color I want you to work on for my next yard birds. Lol. Only problem is I think I'd have trouble keeping my food source up in northern mn.

All is well with the vacation. Having a blast.

BC Glad to see they have internet down there so you can follow us?

Did you get a good pool (cabana) boy? Are you sorry you did not take me with yet?

Is your Hubby getting to see the proper amount of skimpy beach wear?

I just candled eggs, while it was still dark out. My turkey eggs are on day 14, no sign of development! I am happy about that. However, that means I have several dozen infertile turkey eggs to get rid of. It is too early for turkeys IMHO, but the turkeys feel otherwise. I did not throw the turkey eggs out, day 14 is too early for them to be thrown.

At the same time I candled the 20th Hatch. I am disappointed there. Not one of Ed's eggs are any good. This is the first batch I thought would be good. but I do not think I have seen him perform his duties in the breeding pen. All the BA eggs are good as most of the SS eggs are. There were a few Creamette eggs that were not good, but not more than expected.

At the NPIP school they told us we should get close to 100% hatches. I have my doubts on that one. I have increased my humidity and am going to raise it again today. They said 50% is where we should shoot for and 65% for last three days. I was running 25% and aiming for 40 on last three days. So I am changing and will see what happens.

Back to Ed. Is it possible he does not like his breeding pen and is on strike? He has a 4x6 coop and a run divided into 2 parts, a 6x8 run and a 8x8 run. That's 136 sq ft for 5 birds. There are corners and places to get away from each other. If his eggs are not good soon, I will switch him and the BA's around. They are living in a large covered pen, but have turkeys with them. Ed and JJ never seemed to get along, so that is why I did not put him in that pen.

Ivie You think all three of your SS's are boys? That seems unreal. Maybe it is just too early to tell.

Kloppers I have never seen an egg like that, maybe you have a hen trying to make the perfect "dipping" egg .
