Surviving Minnesota!

Sulphur shelf or Chicken of the woods. Picked by my Husband's friend. We learned though that you just cut off the tender outer rings and leave the rest on the tree...as it's overly fibrous for eating anyways. Excellent. Excellent.

Nerve wracking to try the first bite though...yes.

OK i know this has nothing to do with mushrooms as the conversation is going in that direction...lol but i am paniced as i am getting a dozen or so broilers next week and have forgotten what i should feed them. I am going to start them out on the organic starter/grower.... should i just feed them that throughout their short life or until i do some finisher the last couple weeks? Or should i order grains? I have heard if you do grains and ferment them that is better for the birds...fills them up...is better for their constant pooping...etc.... what do you all feed your broilers and where do you buy your feed? I live in Central mn smack dab in the middle of st. cloud and msp. thanks for your help...

I have to tell you all something.

Roger has not come after one of us humans this spring.

His hens have been laying and laying for 6 weeks or more and not one toe out of line from that Roo. Has his testosterone plummeted? Does he care anymore? He is being so amazingly good. I'm just proud as punch of him. He is 4 years old. IDK what to think. I have probably just jinxed myself today and will take a spur to the calf.

I did see him eyeing Sadie on the lawn. She was laying down with one of her pieces of cord wood gnawing away. And she looked vulnerable or easy pickings and he feinted towards her. She stood up and retaliated with a snapping white tooth bite in the air thank goodness. He backed off and she did too. I think it was Good I was on the deck at the time. But other than that --Nada from that boy. Maybe he's just happy and has it all figured out now.

Believe it or not it turned into a nice day down here! the sun is shining, the chickens are ranging. It is still jacket and hat weather but better than the 'wintery mix' they were calling for all day. I can see in the far off west sky that it isnt going to last though.

I had to go out and use some expanding foam spray in the windows of my shop to help keep it a bit warmer in there. it was making a cold draft through the brooder room. While i was at it, the chicks made their first venture out from under the hover that I have seen! they are so raggedy looking right now but I still think they are cute :)

If you aren't looking for organic food, hit up fleet farm and buy they Sprout Brand Meat Maker. it is 20% protein. I feed that from week 3 until the end for mine (well not this year and I am mixing my own feed, but in past years)

Nah I think he is just happy. None of my roos have charged me this spring. Onlyy BRs did that and my Welsummer on one occasion.

It is healing up nicely.  the last of the scabs peeled within the last few days.  NOw i just have some nice new pink skin with just a little scarring where it was worst and one spot where i picked a scab too early.  I was going mad as it was sooooo itchy in the last week as the new skin grew.  I am pretty proud of myself because i took such good care of it always keeping it soft with ointment so it would heal nicely.  I am usually not very good about keeping my wounds clean or cared for because 'who has time for that'

did your bite get infected?  that can really make a mess of bites with how deep they can penetrate

No, it's not deep because I was wearing boots. It's like all the skin layers initially were crushed.
I've been keeping mine dressed, too. The new skin is pushing up & it's making me itchy. So maybe not as problematic as it sounded, no infection. Just itchy. I was wondering if it was taking too long to heal and thought, "I wish I knew someone who had a big wound right around the same time as me..." Thanks for comparing notes. :)

I've heard about people having limited success with establishing morels by blending up fresh picked morels with wood ash, wood shavings, and yogurt I believe. Then you work that into the soil in places that would be ideal (east facing hillside under trees I think?) and wait

I have a stand of trees that are good host species for morels. My friend has been saving her rinse/soak water for me & I keep dumping it in a certain spot. I've heard you can get morels to grow there by doing this. It'll take another year before I will know if it works or not.

Ralphie, I don't think it likely that you will find any Morells in the Togo area.

Really? I did not know that I know a fellow that hunted Morells around Canyon, When he gets out of prison I assume he will hunt there again. He would not really disclose where he got them, I thought I could keep an eye on his other crop while he was on the extended vacation in Bay Port. It might have been he did not care for me.

That Flo-Rida is not quality music in my opinion, but it has a good beat.
Merle Haggard is a country legend with many hits. His best song in my opinion is "Listening To The Wind", but then again I am very opinionated. In my youth I had no interest in country. Rock and R&B was the stuff. Now this heavy metal, rap and hip hop is not worth listening to, and the lyrics of much of it should be illegal.

As always, Sir, you are correct. However, regarding the beat, a heart has a good beat, but that does not make it something I would listen too very often.

This weather is not to my liking. More snow again yesterday and not very warm. the plus side is I can burn brush piles without a permit because there is over 3 inches of snow on the ground.

Get some Hot dogs and marshmallows and make a party of it,
