Hey mine were hatched on April 11th and picked up on April 13th 4 years ago to start my chicken endeavor!!! You're a better chicken mom than me remembering hatch days with a cake. I have 3 originals left.

Same dates here, hatched 4/11 arrived 4/13 four yrs ago . I had ordered 3 each of EE,SLW,GLW, CMarans & SSH. 3 died in the first day or 2. Now I have 7 of the 15. 2 roos were rehomed,( the hamburgs). 1 SLW was rehomed because she was picked on.. a couple hens died of something, one I think was egg bound.

Welcome, blueggs! :)

Truck toppers!? I house a Welsummer roo and his breeding group in one of those over the winter. just raise it a off the ground with a closed base and it stay warmer than the coop!

I'm just not sure about the material I should use for walls. My first thought is cinder blocks, but it need a lot to be able to walk inside. I'm sure I'll come up with something around here...

I was hoping that one of my older hens would go broody but a pullet has so I got 8 EE eggs and put under her today, she is small so they just barely fit! Hopefully all goes well

LOL! It's gotta be a border collie thing! Both of my border collie mixes would always jump in the car as soon as I'd open the door.

Okay I need a little support here. Moved my 4 week old chicks into their coop tonight. Have a heat lamp double hooked set so there's an area about 70 degrees, which is what their brooder has been. I went and checked on then and they were on the opposite side of the coop eating and drinking. I'm sure they will huddle together some for warmth, but they are chickens and will survive, right??!
Someone tell me I'm not a terrible chicken owner! If they make it tonight fine, the next week plus will be a breeze!

They will continue to self regulate, as you've seen. I think they feather out sooner when they can self regulate like this. Just make sure that lamp is real secure. They'll trip on the cord, jump up and knock the light, even try to perch on it. I can't see the photo really clearly on my phone, so you may be just fine in that respect. The lamps always make me nervous, especially after a fire at the neighbors. I have to use them sometimes, too, just double and triple check that lamp and you'll be okay. :)

After some recent talks about mites and lice and whatnot, DW and i decided we should make a bare patch for the girls to dustbathe and add some wood ash. think this is big enough for my girls?
I think most mid to large sized flocks will do fine there, especially in dry weather. I've seen some people put a box or kiddie pool in the coop or under a covered area so it stays dry. They will take turns in the "spa." I also rub neem oil into the roosts and nest boxes twice a year.

I brought home 9 that day. 3 were Roos. Culled out two over time-- the partridge rock and blue Cochin bantam. Kept the nh roo- Roger. 2 EE hens- one left- lily. BA Holly I lost this winter. SLW Sylvia I still have and laying eggs. RIR and NH hen had the internal laying so culled. And that's it for the originals. Sylvia lily and Rog.

I don't know if I could pick mine out in their chick pictures, you're good!

The 4 yr. olds I have left:

EE's- Honey, Tawny, Angel
CuckooMarans- Hoppi, Cocoa
GLW- Goldie
SLW- Edna

Not sure if they are all laying but could be going by egg colors and red combs this spring.
