Surviving Minnesota!

Holm, Happy Birthday!

Coffee, was the warming pad for the chicks to ease the weaning process of your favorite?

Ralphie, how many total chicks did you have hatch and what was the % of total eggs which were set? They were all CLB correct?

Ohh Guess who got 2 eggs today? Yep ME.. That means another 1 of my girls are laying.. It is a pretty small egg half the size of a reg egg.. But that's ok now to figure out who it is...

It is normal for young hens to lay small eggs. It will get bigger as she gets into her regular cycle. The small ones are what you will hear us call 'pullet eggs'

I would love to commit to you about having turkeys. I am actually just beginning the thought process on that. Along the chicken line - I am ready for chicks any time Ralphie. Just say the word when they hatch and I will be there. : )

I am hatching now. But just Creramettes and toads. I have 4 little roosters left, I am keeping them, for now. If I decide to show I need a January bird. I might keep 3 hens from Sundays hatch. I think I have 40 hatching on the 15th of Feb.

I am moving the PC's into their own pen this weekend. BUT I will not be able to set any eggs from them until about March 1st. I want to make sure the chicks are pure and there are too many other roosters with them now. Same as the BA's EE I can do sooner but they will be mixed breeds but what EE isn't.

You should come and visit my turkeys some time. They will convince you how badly you need them. Maybe Borrow one or two for a week.... They like to watch the hallmark channel with their evening beer.

They were all CLBs. I set 28 eggs.

At 12 days I candled 8 that were not developing clears and near clear. I did not throw them just incase.

3 days before hatch I moved 20 eggs after candling again. The 8 were definitely bad.

I hatched 17 out of the 20. I did not open the last three eggs, I was goingto but Judy threw them out before I got around to it.

SO 17 out of 28. Which I am actually very happy with as it was so cold during the collection time and I lost some to being frozen. I was scared more than that would have been killed by the cold.

On a side note, I have my first eggs in the 1202! It holds amazing temps so tight.

Ralphie your hatching is getting me excited to get my birds sorted.
For my first batch I will be doing
Rainbow x Rainbow
rainbow X CX
Buckeye x Dark/WLR Cornish
