New to the site but this is what I was looking for! I just moved to central Minnesota from about 30 min south of the twin cities! We went for renting town house to 30 acres in the woods splitting wood to keep the house warm total flip! But I love this way of life! I'm
New to living like this learning new things everyday! I'm going to get some chicks in the spring!

The second hatch is all gone except 3 boys, They live with the 2 from the first hatch.

They live in the living room so they can watch TV with me..

I have no doubt you let them watch Tv too!

Came home to a prolapsed hen tonight. Have her all cleaned up and am trying to help her. Fingers crossed she recovers...

PS - If you arent familiar with prolapse,dont google it. it is pretty stomach turning. DW was brave and helped me with her but i know she was holding back the upchuck.

Ahhhh ouch poor hen kloppers. I think there are some strategies you can try to help so I hope you google. But understand if it becomes recalcitrant and you need to cull.

Welcome Jon425. There is much to know about chickens... A learning curve so visit the coops pages when designing your coop. Look for those coops in MN to follow design, venting and other bells and whistles. Be smart on breeds. Single combs ( most popular breeds) do frost bite in our Minnesota temps. And visit the BYC education pages in how to get chicks started and on the right foot. Feed, heat, clean water bedding are main pieces but doing it right will determine your success.

Rhett's I was hoping for momma and baby pictures. Thank you for them!!! Her coat looks like velvet. What beautifully cared for animals. Not a splotch of mud or cow pie on that animal. Love it.

I feel like i may need to poke it futher, but I dont want to stick my finger that far in without a glove and some lubricant ( cant believe i would ever use those words regarding a chicken....) so i dont hurt her.

I see she has pooped some more in her pen, so maybe that is why she was pushing so hard. I worry that she will get infected if it does go back in just because of the poop that got on it. sigh... I will do what i must if it comes to that but i want to give her a fair chance still.

If you have coconut oil use that on finger or gloved... has anti inflammatory properties.

My thoughts on it my differ from others, I believe if I'm going to eat the chickens and or their eggs I want to use something I'd eat

i wouldnt use it either. i have no idea what the active ingredients in it are, but i do know that many pain killers ( such as any '-caine' type) are bad for chickens.

i have vaseline if it comes to it.
