Ducks are NOT evil! I think what happened to you is this: You were 5 or 6 years old, and a muscovy drake chased you off and maybe gave you a little peck. So don't get muscovies, but get any mallard derived breed, they are much more friendly and personable than chickens, I know you would love them.

Nope.. I was an adult and was trying to love them by raising them....My Dad was too smart to have a duck on the farm when I was growing up....

Just checking in to see what is new, as I have been watching live online the "South African Million Dollar Pigeon Race". The winner is a U.S. bird. 15 of 2100 back when last I looked and 4 were U.S. birds. All big money winners.
Ralphie, if the chicks are healthy when they leave you then you should be out of it. Some are going to die, and if not properly cared for could be substantial numbers?

What did u think of the Lilacs?? I talked to a big breeder and showed him pics and everything. He said they were really good and the only problems was the wimgs were held a little weird but that could be from standing on a roost.

From the ones I saw, they looked a bit dark to be lilacs. I'm wondering if there is chocolate crossed in them too since there might be a tinge of brownish overhue. I think people call them blue fawns. If you look at pic I pulled below, this is ideally what I think of that color. When looking at show muscovies too, they are almost twice as big on the drakes compared to your regular meat birds. Looking at feather width, skin color, caruncling and depth through the body too. If you come to the MN state show in October, you'll definitely see a difference. These show type ones need a double coop of the standard cooping (think monstrous birds). If you want a really good mentor on this breed, talk to my friend Ryan Carel from CA.

I understand that, but do not need someone bad mouthing my birds. If it was the majority or even a substantial number of buyers I would think it was me. Coffee has one of the worst chicks and he is still kicking, I have the weakest one and he is doing good. So I have a clear conscience.


When are you entering a pigeon in the race?


I could get into pigeons. I had pet ones as a kid and have always liked them. Judy might not like me having them, she can be so "limiting"..

He is beautiful!! I need to find a drake with nice caruncles like that. I do want to show from my pair but do u think I would do any good with some of my own ducklings??

This is just something you need to actually buy from a show breeder and get it going in your flock..... Yours will probably do ok at 4-H level, but if you get into open class shows, they won't place unless they are the only ones there. The Hutchinson show is usually a huge waterfowl meet and we have several guys coming down from Canada. Last show had even Danny Padgett coming up from FL and lots of other huge breeders from all over US. Lots of them bring sale birds!

There is a BCPPA pigeon show in New Ulm on Feb. 13th. Great place to pick up birds if you want to get started. The MN State Pigeon Association has a huge show in November too.
