Surviving Minnesota!

BC Your dog is being a naughty dog. Call me Capt. Obvious.

IMHO what she is showing is behavior not allowed in the dog pack even. You need to be more "aggressive with her, but not in a human way, in a dog way.

When she nips at the kids or scratches them, teach the kids to not run from her, that is just an indication of more play in the dog world. Have whoever she nips or scratches "yelp" loud and in a high pitch. That is what a dog does when it gets hurt in play. It teaches the "nipper" she has went a little too far and to back off. The other thing to do if it gets out of hand is push her head to the ground with your hands around her neck, and pin her down, growl and breath right into her ear or eye. Bare your teeth.

DONOT HURT HER, just restrain her until she submits, when she submits let her up and continue playing like it never happened. Watch a mother dog with her pups these are actions she takes. it is the way a dog learns. You are establishing the pecking order, Sadie needs to be reminded she is at the bottom not the top.

Yelling and slapping does not do much for a dog, those are primate actions not canine.

As far as the chewing and socks go, She will out grow that in a couple years. Until them I suggest you take up knitting

I am in the same spot as Ivie in the dog ownership, even if I am not even close to her age.

. I love dogs, but I am not sure if I will get another or if I am on my last dog. My old white lab is 10, her legs and hips seem to be bothering her, something I can Identify with. I do not know if she will be here next year. Some days I worry she will not be here tomorrow. About 3-4 years ago I had tumor (pre cancer) taken off her, she was given a hysterectomy. I have never had a lab go much over 10.

If I get another dog I will be in my mid 70's when she is 10. There are no guarantees in life and how long it is. I do not want to saddle my kids with having to do something with my dog. It is not fair to the dog or the kids.

My Mother has a cat it is about 10. She worries what will happen to the cat when she goes. I have assured her we will do like the ancient Egyptians and bury the cat with her. I do not want that with my dog. So this could be the last one. BTW Every lab I have had the pleasure of owning has been a great dog after it turns 2.

Hey ya'll! Sounds like things are warming up for ya. We have daffodils & magnolias in bloom here.

Bogtown/Cluckies....saw a spot on our local PBS channel about how the high school shooting clubs are quite popular here in Tennessee. Not owning any kids I had no idea. But did note there are collage scholarships available for these kids.

It takes a lab three years to grow a brain.

So hang in there! Also, the teeth showing thing is usually a sign of submission.

Sometimes they never do! My 8 year old needs an electronic brain installed now and then. I do not have to turn it on, just strap it on her neck and she slows down and thinks about what I want her to do. She was the alpha pup of her litter. A word of advice never take the alpha pup from a litter, They are kind of head strong. BTW she is still a great dog, just needs to be reminded of it once in a while.

Oh I hope Sadie will. Great tips on the yipping and holding head down Ralphie. We put her on her back a lot.

She can be elusive like Meadowlark Lemon-- getting a hold of her.
I do enjoy a dog around but I have been thinking that this will be MY last dog. I'm sick of vet runs and PITA stuff, tick disease you name it. If there's another dog it will be ran all over the country side, fed and watered by the other family members. Momma's done.

Good morning all!

So the excitement of my new load of corn is wearing of and being replaced with dread as now I have to get it backed into my shed. I don't have any experience backing a 4wheel trailer! This could be ugly and I know better than asking DW to help

If I can get the tractor unhooked from the blade I will be in better shape i think

So Jerry, my raspberries don't "run" each plant has a long tap root. I get "baby" plants all over my raised gardens every year that iu have to continually pull out, to the point I'm thinking of moving them way far away in their own garden. So are you saying birds are propagating these seeds?
Well nature has thought of everything it seems when it comes to raspberry/blackberry seeds . In addition to surviving the digestive systems of birds and animals the ones that do not get eaten will grow after the seed coat decays enough to let moisture in . This could take years . I think sun exposure helps activate these . The wild ones up there pop up everywhere it seems . Clear a area in the woods and there they are the next year or so . Power company did a brush removal a few years back and those areas are full of wild ones . Are these wild ones you have ? Most of the tame ones are European red raspberry and mixes with our natives . So they are slightly different species . The tame ones sucker .

I have a hole in my loader bucket that a ball will fit into . I use that to park my flatbed trailer . Driving forward is easier . It could also take a hitch pin .

I was just taking a break from getting my garden calendar in order. It really streamlines things during the growing season to have all the sow, transplant, and harvest dates on the calendar, but I think I'm going crosseyed. More coffee.

Klop Klop - I have thought about getting feed delivered like that for when I'm raising the meatballs - where do you keep yours? I've done bulk purchases of bags and kept them in old fridges to keep the mice out. I also have a few galvanized trash cans for feed, but that would be a lot of trash cans!

Bogtown - I have to join the others in saying your lab will calm down quite a bit. Last winter, our longtime lab mix passed away. He was such a great dog. But yeah, chewed shoes, railings, furniture, EVERYTHING!! He did the play bite on the back with the kids, but he always just thought he was playing (we corrected, of course). When you describe how Sadie runs, that was him, too. He'd get into a really good stride. I would actually just ride my bike and he'd stay by me. He tripped up my son on the bike once, LOL. Such a lab thing to do. So, keep it up. You're on the right track & it'll be well worth the investment.

Ralphie - Nice fluffy creamette chicks! Am I to understand you are incubating speckled sussex at the moment? I can't wait to see what your turkey poults look like this year.

Off to clean out the coop. It is such a nice day!
