Surviving Minnesota!

Bobcat,

As everyone says, Nice coop!..

BTW I see room for at least 200 CX's around it!

No idea what the chickens are. Can you show some close ups and more individual ones.

Thanks. It was a fish house that the people converted into a coop. It needs work. I want to add another roost and I really need to add windows that open for ventilation. Not sure if I'll do that or build a whole new coop for them. I also want nest boxes that can be accessed from the outside via a lid. But we got everything for free and I'm really happy with what we have. Just thinking about what we would like at some point down the road.

Yes we do have room for more CX's! I'll take some better photos of the chickens and post them. We have a vineyard too. I'll have to check and see if grape leaves would be toxic to chickens or not. It would be an easy source of greens for them. I'm pretty sure I can feed them some fermented grapes too!

I'm from Alaska, and your comment about the woodpile being tall enough made me chuckle. Your flock in the picture looks much like mine. I have Rhode Island Reds, Black sex-links and a Chanticler/Arucana mix rooster. Just ordered a few new chicks, Barred Plymouth Rock hens, Buckeyes, Golden-laced, Columbian, and Silver-Laced Wyandottes. Hope they prove to be cold-hardy also. I hope the trip from Mo.to here is a safe one!

Bobcat- Nice Coop and Free is even better....

As we are finishing our coop I have a question about feeders....and how they fare in MN's diverse weather.....I like the look and idea of the bulk PVC feeders. We will have start with 40 chickens....culling about 10-15 meat birds around 18 weeks. Has anyone tried either of these 2 styles of feeders. (Photo Credits to fellow BYC Contributors)

They would be housed inside the coop. However, my coop is inside a shed so I have ample storage outside the coop but inside the shed for bulk storage. Thoughts....Suggestions.....

If you cannot feed them fermented grapes, I like fermented grapes!

Maybe on your coop you could just cut one side down a foot to get a slant to it and put your vents on the high side. Try to keep your chicken doors on the same side as the vent so the air comes in the chicken doors up that side and out the top. Free is a good way to go.

Adding nest boxes to the outside is not hard to do, I use scrap wood for most of mine. Before you know it you will be like me, I have 2 coops, a turkey house, one Turkey Bordello with 4 apartments enough room for One Tom ( Mr T) and 4 hens, 5 breeding coops and plans to put up more.

I had small wild grapes growing in our backyard in Iowa, in fall I would pick a bunch every day and called the chickens. They loved them! They would pull the grapes off the bunch and eat them, they were a little smaller or about the size of a pea.

Jerry..

Thanks for telling me a while back to up my temps a half a degree. It has made a difference. My hatch should start tomorrow, I have one out tonight and another unzipped.

Now it is possible I put them in on Thursday night and marked them for tomorrow. So I could be only 5-6 hours early. Either way it seems to be working better.

I was kind of afraid of going too high so I settled for 99 so I would not get too high now I am at a little more than 99.5 it is doing better..
